Where could I obtain free (GPL or some similar license) bitmapped icons for use with toolbars, for common GUI functions like New, Open File, Cut, Copy ...?

Tango icons (http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Desktop_Project). Or did you mean actual *.bmp when you said bitmapped?

No that's cool, anything that can be readily converted to bmp is just as good. Any other suggestions - what if I don't like the Tango theme? :p
