Yep, that's right, I talked my dad into installing Ubuntu on his computer. I became very tired of always correcting the damage created by my brother through the spyware laden games he always downloaded. I'm typing on it now):P
My Bro is gonna be pissed!

The same sort of thing happened with my family. My father (as with most people of his generation, it seems) pretty much just uses the internet to read those annoying forwards that his friends send around. After running into a few viruses (actually, by the time I got around to it, there were around a dozen), he was pretty desperate to get protected from viruses. Keep in mind that I had virus and adware scanners installed, but they didn't help against the newest viruses that were making the rounds.
So I installed linux (first OpenSuSE, then Ubuntu). All he cared about at first was that he wanted an icon for Firefox and Hotmail as his start page. Easy enough. :)
My wife never really used a computer, so I got her started pretty much the same way. She's pretty amazing... for a person who relatively recently started using computers, she already has "mogrify -resize 500x500 *.jpg" memorized (she takes a lot of digital photos and sends them to friends)!!!
So, in short, they might have a week or so of transition time, but after that, they'll be happy that they can get online and do the regular stuff that everybody wants to do - without worrying about the bad stuff. And you'll still be able to stick a few games on there for your brother (try Nexuiz and Warsow if you really want to blow his mind). 8-)

Well done! Anything to annoy a brother.
I have my wife and one child weaned completely off Windows and the other child will move over as soon as Ultima Online is playable on Ubuntu (or I cut off broadband access to his room).

I will never recommend Linux to my parents ever again. They're just too old to change.

If people are happy with what they've got you shouldn't force/pressure them into something that wont support most peripherals.

Most peripherals? I've yet to run into anything that doesn't work from the moment it was plugged in. With the exception of my mouse (forward/back buttons didn't function). That's it.

As a computing professional I've run into a lot of hardware Ubuntu doesn't like. Mobile phones, mp3 players, printers, usb phones, digital cameras, scanners...... Yeah some people are lucky but most people have at least one issue with Linux compatibility. Gadget lovers are especially major victims.

Gadget lovers who do SOME research about their gadgets are usually just fine.

not all good gadgets are compatible with Linux.
That of course wholly depends on your definition of 'good'.... :-)

That's so funny! My dad had exactly the same request down to T. Firefox on the desktop and Hotmail as the homepage.

I'm going to keep this in mind; I'm probably going to have to iron out some wrinkles for getting rid of Windows, but if these games prove interesting, perhaps that'll make things better.
Cheers

My dad's at the perfect spot because he's only recently acquired a computer. More often than not I'm doing the stuff for him, while showing him, so at least this way here I can teach him Linux.

For everyone of these devices, doing some research will lead you to a device that works great in linux.
Usually there are a few manufacturers who hate on linux, and as long as you avoid them you will be fine - ala lexmark vs HP
Yes, not all gadgets work in linux. This is nothing new.

Yeah, research before hand is a pretty good idea, but sometimes one has to make do with what's already available.
