Just to let people know there is a LUG/LoCo at UCI for people in the Irvine area. While we are not strictly Ubuntu we do maintain a few Ubuntu servers and anyone is welcome. The web page for the group is http://www.ucf.ics.uci.edu.

UPDATE: The group is pretty much defunct right now. Hopefully someone at UCI will step up and bring the group back to its glory but at this time it does not look likely.

Hello, not a UCI student, but I do live in the Area and am a senior at University High down the street. I have no idea what a LoCo is (gonna look it up in a sec) but glad to see some more members in the area. feel free to contact me for Ubuntu help, rallies, or whatever else this thing is.

Cheers,
Trab

I just graduated from UCI last year w/ a comp. eng. degree , I had no idea there was a linux club on campus. I thought I was the only guy on campus running ubuntu. Thats cool that you get your own servers connected to the school network, what services do you run on them?

I am currently a sophomore at Laguna Hills High School, pretty close to UCI, and was just curious, are these metings still being hosted?

Feel free to contact me syassami@gmail.com

BTW: I am starting a Linux club at school next year, and plan to educate a lot of the students about Ubuntu and other Linux's and their functions.

Hello everybody!

I'm new to Ubuntu. I've tried a few other Linux distros in the past, I quickly found I couldn't do much with it without a great deal of "fiddling around" with things I didn't understand.

However, Ubuntu is great! Everything just works. It found my DSL connection and all my peripherals (including my Samsung printer) the first time. Wow!

I do have a question. When I first loaded Ubuntu, it went out and found updates for all the programs except Firefox. Firefox is now at version 2.0.0.2 (I think that's right) as of yesterday, while the one that I'm running is ver. 1.5.0.9. Is there any way to force Ubuntu to upgrade to the current version? If not, do I need to delete ver. 1.5.0.9, download ver. 2.0.0.2, and then install it?

Thanks for your help,
Grant Levy

The normal place to post this would be in the General support category in the forum however I'll let you slide.

I'm guessing you installed Dapper 6.06. The repository for dapper will stay at the Firefox 1.5.* versions of Firefox for various reasons. Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 currently has Firefox 2.0.0.1 and I expect the 2.0.0.2 release to be placed in the repository sometime this week. However if you don't want to upgrade to edgy you can either follow these instructions to upgrade.

Install latest firefox: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/firefox
Install latest Swiftfox (firefox except optimized for your machine): http://getswiftfox.com/installer.htm

Hi everyone,
Good to see you all here, I'm In the Misssion Viejo area. I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu. Wanted to get rid of Winblows because of the distributed computing I like to do is getting larger and more demanding on both OS and hardware.

Winblows just can't keep up. I'm not sure if anyone here does Boinc computing...but anyone who know Linux and ditributed computing would be great to hear from.
