Etch release?

Any idea when the final release will be made?

I am eagerly awaiting the final release as I'm going to build a new PC next month & would really like to have Etch on it. I wouldn't want to install the RC as I experienced a few annoying (though not serious) bugs on my laptop.

I am eagerly awaiting etch myself. It is going to rock, I am sure of it.

The last prediction they made was hopefully end of the year (2006), but I think they stopped because it was getting embarassing to keep pushing it back. As of a couple days ago there were still over 100 release critical bugs. The suspense is killing me!

Still, I prefer that they just take their time and get it right.

The nice thing about Debian stable is that it is "released" (it is better to say "becomes stable" because anyone can get the no-yet-stable stable version of Debian) not on a certain date, but "when it is done". So let them take however long it takes them to make it really stable, not just call it quits because of some silly deadline, release whatever they have on hand and call it stable.

It is like the makers of Wolfenstein, Quake and Doom. id Software always has one release date: "when it's done" and one day they decide they are done, give the news, and people rejoice.

Debian has rocked always. That said, I hoped to have it on my system by now. Its developers are a devote group and I always like to see there work.

I have & it's not, at least for me.
I would imagine that RC2 should be out this month at least, then it'll only be a couple of weeks until the final ;)

i have the release that came out at the end 0f december,installed it and it works fine. i have had no problems with it. give it a try.

I am using it right now, and have been for about a month or so. Etch seems a lot more solid on my laptop than Ubuntu Dapper or Edgy. The only issue I seem to be having is configuring some pieces of software since the dependencies are different than those in Ubuntu, so be prepared to compile some software from source if you are switching over.

i've been using Etch for close to 4-5 months now and it's been perfectly stable for me...i do hear from a very reliable source that Etch WILL be going stable some time in February

often the RC bugs are things that do not affect a end-user but are policy violations or other boo-boos....
IMO etch IS released already and is steady, but will be getting updated until it gets solidified into 'stable'

I've been using it since November and updating it regularly with synaptic. In that time I've not had a crash and barely any problems with things not working as they should. I've only got gnome and xfce installed but from what I've seen its a really nice system that the developers can be proud of.

I'd recommend trying it now, the final release may have a few updates. But it will be trivial to add them with synaptic and you can be pretty much guarenteed that the system won't break with any final updates.
