I just finished setting up a new computer I bought for my mom. I'm so happy for her and happy that this will allow us to spend even more time together as I will be teaching her every second she needs me :-). It's a pretty nice and fast Pentium IV (not good for 3d gaming, but more than enough for what she needs) I assembled it with a nice MSI 661-FM2 board (my box has a MSI 661-FML with everything made by MSI wich I like). She will be using Windows XP. I didn't even think of the posibility of Linux because I want her to be able to just sit down anywhere she goes and start using a computer just like she's used to. It's 1:20am and I just spent this past 2 hours formatting her 80GB HDD, installing the OS and setting up the basic applications she'll need by now (MS Office 2003, TrendMicro 2005 ).

Coolest part about her computer... its mouse and keyboard. They're both Genius brand. The keyboard has a button for just about everything. Excel, word, calculator, web, you name it. She was sleepy today [duh] but I quickly showed her what the keyboard could do, she just said "wao, there's like no excuse for saying you're too dumb to use a computer nowadays :-|". I forgot about buying her a set of speakers, but I don't think she'll need those having her TV behind the computer. I call it mother noir.

I can already see her trying to sit down on my noir box and giving it the "what in the world..." look  .

A very nice thing to do for your Mom.

Mine is going to be 70 in a few weeks and I can't get her near a computer. I try to show her when she's over at our house but she has no interest. I explain all the opportunities to interact with other seniors on the web but she just won't bite.

Oh well, can't force 'em. Be happy your Mom is open to new experiences.

Good on you B2K for being such a nice son.

Nice bored2k. I hope she doesn't want to install new software too often so you can give her a normal account instead of an admin account. That way ... in combination with hitman pro/microsoft anti spyware and a virusscanner like avg windows can be pretty safe and easy.

My father has almost zero computer experience.http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=27996& But today he's getting an imac!

I didn't want to choose windows. And after some thought and research I came to the conclusion that OS X would be better than Ubuntu. It would be possible to get a mac-mini with all the necessary stuff he wants for 1150 euro but when we went to the mac shop together .. he fell in love with the more expensive imac :).

Hello,
for people not getting great with computer, you can also get them something like that :
http://www.ordissimo.com/

But i have a friend working for them, and he says never use it when you know a bit how a computer works, or you'll get mad :)

I hadn't thought of a normal account .. that's pretty smart for Windows own safety (wich is why I like linux way of hiding important things).. thanks for the tip I'll make that account ASAP. I'll have to load tweaknow pro on it so her user has auto login, but that's a mighty good idea!

I wouldn't think of a Mac. As I said I want something she could use anywhere she goes, and In my country, the amount of people with Mac's would be 1 in 800 or more maybe. I barely see one. PLus, I want to administer it, not have to learn how to use a mac..

The great thing about macs is, you almost don't NEED to learn how to administer them.

But you still want her to be able to use other pcs, so a mac is right out.
