View Full Version : what is your longest "uptime" ? (not for servers)

MaximB

if you shutdown your computer every day you probably don't have a hight uptime
but till now, what is your longest uptime ?
(this "competition is NOT opened for servers b/z they almost never got shutdown).

ok... so my current uptime is :

maxim@maxim:~$ uptime
20:02:00 up 8 days, 10:16, 2 users, load average: 1.95, 2.32, 1.98

what is yours ?

(to check your uptime just type "uptime" in the command line).

P.S
if you restart your computer WITHOUT shuttingdown your uptime is reset.

actually, saying that my longest uptime was around 80 hours when I just left my PC rendering a walkthrough animation of a house in 3D for a college assignment/project. In total it was something like 54 hours of render time for 30 seconds of video!

and can someone tell me what is "load average: 1.95, 2.32, 1.98" in the "uptime" means ?

my current uptime (my longest so far):

jd@jd-laptop:~$ uptime
13:17:33 up 7 days, 18:50, 2 users, load average: 0.47, 0.56, 0.87

i DO have a personal server in my house (using standard PC hardware, not server hardware) that i use as my FTP/HTTP/IRC/SSH/media server/full-home fileserver that's running FreeBSD 6.0 and the current uptime on that box is 211 days and counting. Also, my MythTV box running KnoppMyth has currently been up for about 120 days.

I normally use 3DS Max which I use on Windows, and have been for around a year now, but I'm currently learning Maya (which I love!) and am using it on Ubuntu :-D It's one of the main reasons I started learning Maya, so I can be free of Windows (though I still use Windows for Photoshop)

sorry to be off my topic AGAIN :-# but did you hear about the free open sourced GREAT program blender ? www.blender3d.org
you MUST check it out if you didn't already, and there is a new version coming up in a few weeks.
why use non free when you have all-in-one free 3d modeling, animation and game creation program that runs on Linux perfectly and natively ?

Yeah I've heard of and tried Blender. It is a good program but there are certain things that annoy me (mostly the interface), plus as a career I'd like to be a Lighting or Modeling Technical director working on feature films and Blender just isn't used at companies that work on feature films. I'd rather be learning the program that is mostly used for the job I want to get into. Blender is a great program, but it's just not for me ;)

Edit: Maya also works perfectly and has a native linux version.

MaximB
January 16th, 2007, 08:39 PM
I'm sorry to hear that AlexC, Blender is a VERY fast program, fast modeler and it's advancing in the fastest speed of them all, even now you have some features not available in the more popular programs, and soon in a few years it WILL be the most advanced program.

Mips - they don't show Linux uptime there...

and they have other problems...
and I don't get the issue of OS and server... I mean it either a server or a regular "home" OS.

----------------------------------
why th high uptime you ask.
well...
1. it's not healthy to turn ON the PC several times a day (not to be turned on).
2. we are downloading and sharing stuff ;)
3. some of us have servers

current uptime is 2 days, 5:41, 2 users, load average: 0.15, 0.15, 0.06. That's GNOME running but no other programs..

I tend to reboot every 8 days or so.. I really don't have a good reason for doing it.. I just do..

I did notice though, that Linux does work a bit better the more you keep it on.. That might just be me but, everything runs really fast after it's been on for a while.

Koori23
January 16th, 2007, 11:29 PM
electric bill?

Could be wrong, but computers are generally low electricity users. Besides that, it's actually less stressful for your hardware (mobo is kept a consistent temperature, Power Supply isn't stressed as much)..

My Windows 2000 desktop, back when I still used it, was up for over 6 months as most. Frankly, I don't see Ubuntu as any more stable than a well maintained Windows system. Well, as long as it likes your hardware and you don't install much software or security fixes, that is. :)

Right now, my uptimes are mostly hurt by loss of power and upgrades. Current uptime: 11:15:55 up 58 days, 7:16, 4 users, load average: 0.07, 0.10, 0.06

and can someone tell me what is "load average: 1.95, 2.32, 1.98" in the "uptime" means ?i was reading about how load avaerage is different to CPU percentages the other day, i had to re-read the thing about 5 times because i wasn't concentrating very well  anyway, if you have one processor then a load average of 1 would mean your CPU is being used perfectly - no processes are waiting to use the processor and the processor is being used continuously without any delays. the same applies to a load average of 2 if you have 2 processors etc, etc anything over those numbers means instructions are having to wait to use the processor/s while other instructions are run.

While I think there probably is some truth to the adage that turning on a computer is hard on the motherboard, I don't think it's a significant probably. In my 20+ years of computer use, I've never had a motherboard burn out. And as that article points out, televisions and other electronic devices survive much more frequent on/off changes and they are made of the same types of parts as computers. I have had a few TVs give out on me (though I wouldn't know if on/off played a part in that), but even that was very rare compared to the amount of TVs I just got tired of.

fair enough, but the computers i learned on/used at college were old, and due to being near constantly re-booted we needed to fit at least one new mobo each lesson so im always v aware of the stress components feel.

I just rebooted. So,about 2 hours. This is not a server.

Usually I pay no mind to if it is left on and for how long. For months at a time usually. The monitor and speakers go off unless I need them.

Other machines in the home are usually left off until needed. Since this one is always ready for use, at any time.

It only costs me around $6 a month to run it 24/7. Varied use levels and use times. I will gladly take the small hit on the electric bill. Having it ready and not waiting for the boot. It matches my "always on internet."

1 minute boot times(at least). Calculated for the month= 30 minutes of lost time each month(at least.) I save money and time leaving it on.

A couple of years ago I had to make a survey of all of our servers or desktops providing services on the company network. I found an old HP desktop with Windows 95 on it running a service (though I can't recall the specific service at this moment). Turns out this thing was on for just over eight years and it was still doing its job! It was tucked in a corner along with a few other HP desktops covered in dust and obviously forgotten over time.
