TDFSB apparently it takes your filesystem and creates a 3d world with it
sounds cool but my computer doesnt support open gl...
anyone have any comments or used it ever

this is from the synaptic entry its in the universe repo...

A 3D filesystem browser
TDFSB reads directory information and displays it as a 3D
world. cd'ing into another directory is possible by simply
walking into the assigned sphere. It also reads images and
text files and displays their contents.

though this was funny and wanted to share it:D

sounds cool, I'll definately check it out. Is it anything like the new document browsing they have on the lg3d window manager?

dont know but i think that it gives you something to walk around with and you walk around and look at files...

HOLY %$*& that is awesome

I like it!!!!

I'm not sure how useful it is, but it's a lot more fun than a 2d display.

SWEET. Thanks for posting this. Everyone should check this out!!!!!

anybody remember movie Hackers? with the Gibsons 3d file system? I would still like to see somebody do something like that.

Its a good kill of a couple of hours if you haven't seen it!
(get a good laugh when they talk about 'burns notebook, but hey it was '95)

That's really cool! Reminds me of the file view in Hackers. That movie really sucked, but I must say - that part of it was freakin' amazing. ^_^

It managed to hard-crash my laptop already. True, I tried to enter a remotely mounted directory (through sshfs), but that should not matter more than it does for cd. I'm removing it as I write.

I was just thinking that.

You can get the program used there in SGI's website.

I made a thread about it awhile ago.

Yeah, tdfsb is for pimps.

For a cool effect, if you have Beryl, put tdfsb fullscreen on one desktop, xcruise on another, and yeah, do your thing.

I hope someone picks it up and does some more work, I love it.

3D Browsing is stupid. From a productivity standpoint, it's a step backward from classic 2D point and click, which is horrible compared to a .bashrc full of aliases. Even if they make it so all of my atoms were broken down and piped into the process directly, so I could actually walk into my files, it would be stupid. Worse, combining it with another waste of time, Beryl? I'd rather go back to the days of punch cards. It would take less time, even if I had to manually punch them all.

You go do that ;)
Who said it had anything to do with productivity?

Woah, awesome. You can listen to music and watch movies in it aswell! I like to zoom right into the movie file and make it fullscreen, then hold left-click and hit enter.

This is absolutely brilliant. Sure, it could do with a little polishing, especially faster file browsing and some better textures, but it is very, very good.

Ok tried it. Worked fine until I activated rotate cube mode, my skydome conflicted with the transparent desktop + opengl filebrowsers.

What do you mean?
It works good for me, as long as I maximize rather than go fullscreen, I guess thats what I meant to say :-k
Screenshots are all f'd up tho  Is that what it looks like for you normally? Is cube transparency set to windows aswell?

This is a pretty cool program.

I've got a p3 1 ghz 512 ram with a 32 meg video card and it runs just fine, but some folders with too many objects cause it to choke.

I made myself a little picture gallery with some mozart.

This has some potential. I don't know if anyone has heard of it, but this kind of reminds me of Portal, the Half-Life 2 mod. This might be where things are going. Every folder is a room; your desktop is represented as the top of an actual desk maybe? After playing around with it (read: figuring out the odd and somewhat counter-intuitive controls) it's certainly growing on me. Other than that, the look is not top notch, but that's been covered pretty thoroughly.

A screen for those interested. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/troymcdavis/TDFSB.png)
