View Full Version : (Command Line) Fun, Anyone?

Aetherius
January 15th, 2007, 12:29 PM
Hey all,

I'm currently in work (windows) and SSH'ing into my box at home. I have set up an X server on this windows box and I'm able to forward my X output to it.

I've attached a shot of my SUSE-style kicker running on XP :D

However, this is way to slow and jumpy for me to run any really useful app. So the challenge I set for any of you procrastinators out there is as follows....

GIVE ME COMMAND LINE FUN!

Random suggestions are welcomed, anything that is _entirely_ CLI and fun.

GO!

Aetherius

i'll skip the (snip) :P

Reminds me of a long time ago when I used to play Homeworld online. This guy would start a game with me, I'd ask him if he knew all the cheats. He'd get interested and ask about them.

"Without opening a chat box type in 'Jesus Saves'"

"What does that do?"

"Just try it"

BYE BYE gullible stranger..

E - selects all ships

S- Self Destruct, press again to confirm.

I enjoy links2, always surprises me at how quick and useable it is.

I know it's a little off-topic but have you considered installing NX (http://www.nomachine.com) [nomachine.com] to get a full Gnome/KDE/WhateverObscureWM desktop at work on your Windows box?

sudo nano last_will_and_testament (sudo, as this is not something you want other users to be able to alter).

So, you want some command line fun?

I tell you, man... in your lunch break or whatever, you could try writing a script to do your backup for you, if it would be at all useful to you. I did this for myself, and it was pretty fun. It also made my weekly backup process much easier and quicker.

If you're interested, I could post the script I wrote for you to look at.

by far, the best 2 CLI IRC apps are irssi and BitchX

My apologies for snipping some of the posts. It was done in the interest of linux newbs, who might otherwise do harm without understanding it. Cheers.

Without someone reposting the actual command, could someone tell me what the command that had to be snipped did?

K.Mandla
January 15th, 2007, 06:04 PM
It's the command that tries to forcibly remove the entire root directory. Most people familiar with linux might recognize it as moderately dangerous, although it might or might not work on a machine, depending.

The consensus among staff lately has been to try and prevent the "AACK! MY UMBUNTO IS HOSED!" panic thread that might follow it.

We now return you to your originally posted topic.

fortune is always fun. A friend of mine even wrote a small Java app to have it spit out fortune every ## seconds. There is also a futurama mod for fortune if that's something that would interest you.

gtmess is quite good. A shell based MSN messenger program
useful if you can ssh to your home pc (using non defualt ports etc), but can't access msn directly from work due to firewalls :D

I'd remember playing this back in the Seventies and couldn't believe it was still around, let alone somewhat maintained.

More challenging then I remember though.

Wow, I can get to my gmail account with elinks. Text browsers always seem to crap out when I try to use them with my gmail account. Cool, thanks.

some good CLI programs not mentioned yet are moc (music on console) which is a command line based music player, and lynx which is a text only command line based web browser. you could also try links2 if you want one that displays frames and has picture support.

sudo apt-get install lynx moc links2

to use moc the command is actually "mocp"

i have yet to try rtorrent but u can use the pre-installed "/usr/bin/btdownloadcurses"

I'm confused, what did this do?

It hosed my terminal, and I looked back through the history...it was trying to install things?

Edit:
If you run it with echo, it spits back a message.

If you run it without echo.....lots of stuff happens.....
