As I'm staring to learn some html code, I'm (obviously) interested in being able to upload that for all eyes to see. The problem is a lot of the web hosting sites have a lot of frilly features that I will never touch (blog, photo, web page creator).

All I'm basically looking to do upload an html file via an ftp client (probably use gFTP) and be done with it. Maybe later on I'll put a few pictures & possibly a java applet (once I learn how to make applets).

So if anyone has had an experience with a free web host, I'm interested because I can't really decide. :)

You might want to check this site out. They have a very good free package.

Why not just host it yourself? That's the beauty of this OS... it gives you the tools you need to do just about anything you want.

Run an Apache server, get yourself a free dynamic (assuming you have a dynamip IP address), write your pages, fire them off to your server, and you're done. :D

I would, but I don't have a computer that I can keep running 24/7. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll get an old junker in the future and put Ubuntu Server on it (provided that my parents would even let me keep a spare computer). For now, I'll still look for a web service.

does your ISP give you space? I thought most everywhere gave at least 10mb which should be enough for text & banners. Larger images could be hosted elsewhere like flikr etc

I am using 1500mb.com (http://1500mb.com) right now for a testing server. It comes with 1500mb of space (surprise!) and ftp access, database, etc.
Decent speed also try one of my sites here (http://chavo.1500mb.com/news.php).
