Are these frontends for mplayer the same? If not which one would you guys recommend? On a side note, say i install kmplayer, do i need to download the separate Binary Codec Packages (to play less popular formats) from mplayer website or is everything included already?

MPlayer with all the trimmings minus some newer wmv stuff is in multiverse, and KMPlayer uses xine by default (though it's easily changed), so mplayer isn't a dependency. I've never used KPlayer, but KMPlayer is pretty cool. Just install both and try them out.

KMPlayer is mostly good when you want to watch a video embedded in a web page in Konqueror. KPlayer is far more advanced as a standalone player, and it can also embed a video in web pages. So I prefer KPlayer.

For watching videos in KDE, Kaffeine is usually your best bet.

Have you tried KPlayer? In my experience KPlayer is much more stable than Kaffeine, and more advanced in many areas. Also it uses MPlayer rather than Xine, which usually gives better output (A/V sync, correct aspect ratio, etc.)

I have to agree with KPlayer. I use because: 1) it's more fault tolerant (If the video and audio aren't properly synced, KPlayer will drop frames as needed. very good for downloaded .avi files.); 2) Supports more codecs (codices?) than any other AV program I've tried ('cept, maybe VLC, which I can't get running on my Linux box); 3) highly customizable, although the defaults tend to work just fine for me.

If you install KPlayer, be sure to install the Win32 codec package (but that maybe install by default, can't remember).
