Emacs shows rectangles instead of characters

I just sudo apt-get installed emacs, but when I start it the fonts are messed up. See attached screenie. What could be the cause of this?

I've tried to poke around with xorg.conf and added some fonts as mentioned in a similar thread, but it didn't help, and now I'm lost.

I have that problem with emacs21 as well. I never figured out how to fix it, I just installed emacs-snapshot with gtk+ support. Do a search in synaptic for "emacs snapshot" and it'll show up. Works perfectly, and looks much better.
