I've just read something about that thepiratebay.org is getting their own nation. How are they gonna do it? yes, they are gonna buy a small platform that is in international waters, its called sealand.
How about ubuntu/linux or the base of GPL should get our own nation ? with airforce and everything ? +protect GPL/The whole Linux stuff for our lifes + everything is free, like in not free beer, but in free speech ? just an idea ;)

Maybe this could be something for RSM ? he is finally free in he's own nation !..

i think the pirate bay (nice name in this context btw) does this only to get away from laws they don't like

ubuntu, linux, gpl and all are just a very good _legal_ alternative which should be able to exist in a 'normal' world
buying an bit sealand just to protect our beliefs is kind of bowing down to a belief that someday the whole community will be overthrown

and apart from that, no one should be buying land, land belongs to nobody :p

You'r probably right, but think about it.. if microsoft trying to do something(like in the novell deal) they are actually going to war with another country, and then.. russia gets mad at MS :o

nevermind, this could end up in WW3 :???:

OR, a nation there we could have our own hosting servers, that's protecting everything that has to do with open source :P

EDIT: And you have to be a sealand citizen to use open source software, if MS is trying to be a sealand citizen we're blocking them out.. so, if we had done this a long time ago, the deal with MS and novell would'nt exist today.. or?

(sorry for my english writings)

Nobody recognises Sealand, it exists in British waters.

Wasn't there a digg yesterday about an island that was for sale? I think a "Ubuntu Nation" would be cool, lol :D

an ubuntu nation would be pretty cool. i agree.
but only if we had something more than a rusty old oil platform. something like a tropical island with hola-hoops girls. :D
maybe i'm getting a bit carried away. :p

(yesterday on the #ubuntuforums on irc lotusleaf mentioned jenda putting stickers on passports)

that would be nice, to have a stamp in your passport saying you've been in ubuntu

Can we just have our own passports?

Why not contact Magrathea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Places_in_The_Hitchhikers_Guide_to_the_Galaxy#Magr athea) and ask them if they can make us our own planet while we're at it? ;)

We must calm our self down, and think realistic.. now, lets figure out how we get the money to buy our own island :)

TooRight
January 12th, 2007, 02:24 PM
hehehe, it's to celebrate open source, so the funding would come from donations of course :p

drfalkor
January 12th, 2007, 02:31 PM
Yeah, we can do this if we want, but this is a project that is gonna take years.. so, we need to make a one page site or a two paged site that's says everything, Mark Shuttleworth has approved this project, and then place a "Make a donation" button on the front site + maybe a forum there mark could pop into sometimes and write, so people would know that we're not bullshi*ing :) Then, Wait for some years, and then maybe after 15-20 years, we have enough money. But we need the media to write about this project then, so people could know about it, maybe be on the TV or something.

Just an idea :)

i've got an even simplier idea:
we steal a nation. :D
we go somewhere in africa and just steal the country while everybody's sleeping.
but that would be against the ubuntu ideal. shoot!](*,)
anyone else?...

drfalkor
January 12th, 2007, 04:18 PM
lol, that would be a bad idea.. but maybe work.. take a look at my idea, it is more realistic, and thepiratebay.org people is working on their own project like that :D

i wonder where that sealand is. the only sealand i know of here is a strip of land by chester where the River Dee has silted up.

Sealand is an oil rig off the British coast. There's some debate about whether it is in British waters, it wasn't when built but was when they went UDI.

I think it would be more appropriate for us to set up our own second life* and create an Ubuntu land on the world of Tux. Naturally the land will be covered in penguins who have gotten too close to some dark matter so have bred out of control.

However, it arguably is tacitly recognized by Britain itself in recorded judicial precedent, which in turn is internationally recognized. A very respectable argument could be made about its sovereignty. The only downside is the practical lack of infrastructure from their part (They have been very lazy about it. If it were me running things, the place would be completely self sufficient by now [-( )

Its kinda sad that they're selling out like that. The place has a very fascinating legal history. I would love to have an opportunity like that. ](*,)

Perhaps what PirateBay needs to do is find some icy glacier in international ocean waters and stick servers there with a satellite connection, powered by a large solar panel array. They could pick 3 locations for redundancy.

i heard that the piratebay got seats in the goverment in whatever country its based in (sweden i think) cause they started their own political party and got like the minimum number of votes to get like a single seat.... but becoming its own county? doubt it.

The Pirate Party, which does not have any seats anywhere, has nothing to do with The Pirate Bay.

I assume there would be free beer in Ubuntu land(?)

Anyway, we are missing the obvious here - New Zealand! Let's buy it. Someone post a bounty and I'm sure we'd raise enough. We could make money by hiring out the country-side to fantasy film makers.

There is also an island in the Southern Pacific called Pitcairn that has a population of about 45 and which is "having a bit of trouble" right now what with the entire male population going off to jail. Although nominally a British Dependency, I'm sure the Blair Government would be happy to get rid of it. Watch ebay!
