Pretty sure you can request Linux to be installed on a Dell in Canada & the U.S., too. I think you just have to ask them (you still pay that $50 or whatever in place of Windows).

Or you can buy it with Windows, and get a $80 refund. Or so I've heard.

You can get Dell to do just about anything. If you're a corp client, you can probably hand them a drive image and say 'this is what I want on all the PCs you send to us'....

The rep I spoke with said they already come pre-installed on the hard drives before they even build it. I doubt this, but that's what he told me. I think you can get it without Windows, but they won't drop the price.

Wow, this is surprising. I thought Dell was in cahoots with Microsoft for some reason.

I actually had a mom and pop store offer me a win2k discount because I was planning to install linux on it. Guess legal 2k have some value for the proper victom.

Anyways I am going to look into this in Canada and if I can get a decent refund I might buy one.

You copied your links wrong smoker. And if you do order a Dell and it comes with windows, you can give them back your license and get a $60 dollar refund.

That's undoubtedly correct.

I heard someone ordered a computer on the phone (can't remember which company) and asked that no OS be installed. That pretty much dumbfounded the sales rep. :p

You cannot request a computer with Linux or no OS from Dell in the US, Canada or Europe.

You can pay for Windows, take photos of you disagreeing with the EULA and have a lengthy phone call with Dell. You will get about $50 back, its more about principle than money.

Not true. You can get a linux distribution (FC, last time I checked) installed. You can also get it without an operating system altogether, but you won't save any money. Best thing to do is return the Windows license.
