I realized that I've never played with Ubuntu's fast user switching feature, so I decided to give it a try.
Now I have Gnome, KDE, and XFCE running on the same system at the same time, logged in as the same user. I wasn't sure it would all work, but it did all work, perfectly, using only the GUI, not that I can think of any benefit to running them all at once.
