Am I right that if you run Ubuntu live just from CD nothing is saved when the session is ended? I think the same happens with Knoppix . However, Puppy Linux can run from a multisession CD, you can alter and save any configurations or data and the CD drive bay isn't locked, though I haven't got my wireless card configured with it yet.

What I'd like is a multi-session Ubuntu live CD that my son could use on his XP machine.

Is there any such Ubuntu animal?

That is correct. Once you shutdown a LiveCD everything is lost.

The Puppy Linux CD only takes up about 100MB, Ubuntu takes up the whole CD, so there would be no space to save the sessions, although you could save session information to the hard disk.

There is a way of doing it with a USB Pen drive (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent).
