View Full Version : ATA and IDE HDDs? What's the difference?

January 7th, 2007, 08:15 PM
n00b question alert!

Could someone please explain to me the difference between IDE and ATA HDDs? See, I've got a spare 120GBish ATA drive hanging around, which I want to turn into a portable hard drive. The confusion is caused by the fact that ATA HDD enclosures seem to be twice the price of IDE enclosures... can I put my ATA drive in an IDE external HDD enclosure?

Thanks :KS

As far as i know ATA (PATA) & IDE is basically the same thing and you should be able to use your drive just fine.

SATA on the other hand is a different story
