looks pretty cool, this is the successor to the 770...can't really justify buying one ($400), however might do it anyway....

Yep thias is what I am getting, I have to admit that when the iphone word came out I was like who carea I am getting an Iphone, but then I realized that with all the hype and with all my needs I really needed was the N800, I can deal with having a normal cellhpone and do all my international call using the N800 (is cheaper) I really like the improvments form teh 770 to the 800 really worth an upgrade. I just wished that their VoIP was something open source rather than skype, but since it runs Linux maybe this helps Skype on Linux. I hope that the 14.95 offer fo unlimited calls works on this this way I can just get the lowest plan on my cingular service. I think that with the release of the iphone the only device that I see making competition with it is this tablet. I think Jobs sometimes need to get a grip he made it sound like tehir multi touch thing is the only technology that can do that. I cna use the canola player on the Nokia 770 so I guess Linux was ahed of apple and in turn ahead of any other device by 5 years.

Nokia published specs does not show OGG support though :-(

And am I correct in assuming that this still does not have mobile (cell) phone capabilities?

No, it can connect through a blue tooth compatible phone. Doesn't have one in it.
Seems like you could edit it's software to install ogg codecs and flash 9

It is based on the maemo platform which has tons of extra software. I am sure there most be something that plays ogg. I am getting one of this one since as far as I know it is going to include the Rhapsody music service. I wonder if thismena that we are getting Rhapsody for Linux soon. Helix, Real player, Rhapsoy (?) for Linux

I'm definitely looking into getting this at some point, but it's got a few bugs to be fixed up first. For example, videos on YouTube play very choppy.

I've found this blog which has a lot of info on the n800 plus a video of it.

i have only tried moving files, this is pretty easy with USB or SSH (using nautilus to mount the nokia over ssh).

for email i think if you use IMAP on both then they would always be sync'ed. my main email is POP at the moment, but i think i will change it to IMAP soon.

what would you want to sync with it?

http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/index.php might be a good place to ask more questions.

Anything that's similiar to fMA or Myphoneexplorer, I've missed having such an app to my SE on linux... makes my phone incomplete :-|

I got two other questions: Can you connect and use your phones webcam with your ubuntu box? and is there any decent calendar app for it?

It appears that Nokia has put together a video chat application, Nokia Internet Call Invitation (Beta) and a Windows app that can connect with it. They provide the source on the bottom of this page: http://videovoip.tableteer.nokia.com/

I wonder what it would take to port that to Linux....

I will be considering if I can justify saving money for this thing .... it looks awesome, just don't know if it would truly be worth the money.

The platform isn't really as open as it would seem. All the important bits are proprietary and can't really be community supported. Which is a problem since Nokia only supports the latest hardware version, i.e. you can't install the latest software on the 770, which is stuck with pre-beta quality software. Otherwise it's a cool device, but with Nokia's policy of surprise discontinuation, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

we'll just have to wait for neo 1973 (http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS2657814070.html) :) and see which one is better.

Why must I pay $300-400 for a non-standard device that will be orphaned by the vendor in a year (like Nokia did with the 770)?

If it would just run a standard x86 Linux distro -- like Ubuntu. I would like to be able to download x86-only stuff from the vendors.

AMD's Geode LX800 runs a system-on-chip with 500 MHz Athlon-like processor, and only uses 5 watts. This is the same power as 2 USB ports.

Why can't we pay a little more and get standard linux and standard-driver hardware?

I would have buy it in a minute if it was also a mobile but don't know why they continue this way
