Distribution Release: KNOPPIX 5.1.0 (http://distrowatch.com/3938)
http://distrowatch.com/images/icon-large/knoppix.png (http://distrowatch.com/knoppix) Klaus Knopper has announced the release of KNOPPIX (http://distrowatch.com/knoppix) 5.1.0 live CD and DVD: "Finally, it's done. Just in the past couple of months, there has been quite a lot of new and exciting development in the GNU/Linux world, which of course should also be present in the current KNOPPIX version, even if some of the new and optional features (like the 3D desktop with Beryl) are still experimental. New kernel, KDE and OpenOffice.org releases have spoilt our planned release dates, but now all these are available in the new release. New: update to Debian Etch; Linux kernel 2.6.19.1 + FUSE 2.6.1; Cloop 2.05 real-time decompression; replace Unionfs with Aufs...." Knoppix 5.1.0, slightly hacked so that as well as running the usual way (booting from DVD) you can install it as a screensaver for Microsoft Windows. To quit the screensaver, Ctrl-Alt-F and click the X. Not tested with Vista (feedback appreciated) and no warranty that it will actually save your screen. Enjoy !

Size 4.05 GB (4,344,965,120 bytes)http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=3380&rated=1

I think I'll give the liveCD a try... downloading now from dutch http 5.8 Mb/sec... nice ;)

edit: don't like the liveCD, it just hangs on bootup @ PCMCIA found, starting cardmgr

I've used older versions of Knoppix before, but this didn't go well.

When X starts my monitor turns itself off, unless you boot it failsafe, but then it doesn't find my mouse I get an error message telling me I don't have enough memory to start KDE anyway.

Ah well, I'm happy with Edgy and don't need Knoppix, just thought I'd have a play...

Yeah, the CD version blacked out and stopped on me. I hit alt-F2 to see what was going on and it sort of stalled. I then tried installing under the "advanced" setting where it asks you everything. This time it installed and booted up but did not detect my mouse either so I was sort of stuck. Oh, and many have reported this on their forum.

I am downloading the new DVD so hopefully all that will be fixed. *crossing fingers*

Well, I finally downloaded the new DVD Knoppix version 5.1 and it did the same thing as the older CD version. I got a blank screen midway through bootup and no mouse detection. I tried several of the cheat codes. Like the CD, I was able to boot up in "Failsafe" mode but no mouse, useless.

I used the expert mode to basically create my own Xorg.conf file. I have done this before with other distros, only it did not work with Knoppix, blank screen. I tried changing drivers, refresh rates to screen sizes, nothing.

They really need to fix this. Oh well...it will make a nice coaster. Next distro... ](*,)

It's a shame, so much promise, so little delivered. :) Perhaps there'll soon be a 5.1.1 that will be more forgiving of different hardware setups.

I finally got the live CD & DVD 5.1.1 to boot. I had a wacom usb pointer plugged in which I think was confusing the install for a mouse. I unplugged it and it detected my PS/2 mouse, but still got a blank screen. I then used the "debug" mode which I never tried and that did the trick, booted in with mouse activated. Still, they need to fix that.

Promising OS, I will install it and give it a test.

Ok, I missed the part about Knoppix being basically "only" a livecd. I was about to try and install to my hard drive, then glanced over the forum. Many, including some of the builders suggest not to install Knoppix. Many things break when you do, such as networking and several other problems.

Instead, they suggest installing Debian Etch and basically building up from there. My question is this. I think Debian Etch loads the 2.6.17 kernel, but can you download and install the 2.6.19.1 (latest) and so forth?

The current etch kernel is: 2.6.18.3 and likely will not change because etch repo is now frozen.

beyond all that, I had KNOPPIX installed on my hard drive for about 6 months and found it one of the most reliable distros to install on your hard drive...

keep in mind the KNOPPIX live CD installs Debian on your hard drive.....

Why did I use KNOPPIX to install Debian?....simple Debian does not have good hardware detection and would not load on my computer....KNOPPIX has always worked without fail.

I'll vouch for that, Debians hardware detection is not user friendly, you have to know intimate details about your computer, and I just don't want to bother with that crap. I just want it to get up and running so I can start working with it. I'll Download the latest KNOPPIX DVD and see what it's all about. I just ordered the latest Solaris 10 DVD, so I can't wait for that to come in as well. And I saw the new Windows Vista. I think it's an exciting time to be a computer nerd.
