Thanks very much for showing us where to find that; I've been looking through the repositories but could never find it.

Personally I add the link to my sources.list

Thusly

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main

That way I keep reasonable up to date with the codecs.

BTW I have tried automatix 3 times hoary, dapper and edgy and have had the devils own job fixing the mess it made of my computer.
Automatic tools like that and easyubuntu are all very well, but when they screw up they really screw up. I would rather learn to do it myself than have some third party unofficial tool do it for me.
If I put in one thing that screws my system like pulling the w32 codecs from debian for instance, it is easily recoverable, however a tool like automatix installs several things at once and so if something goes wrong the fallout is huge.

I hate the way that whenever a multimedia codec or program is asked about someone tells them to install automatix rather than the OP actually learning something about linux/ubuntu and doing it from the official FAQs

gremlinzzz, I'm perplexed as to what you're trying to do here. Sure, these are helpful tips, but your thread is going to get "buried" again in 24 hours or so.

Gremlinzzz, I know you're just trying to help, but posting new threads saying, "This is how you do _______" and then linking to something else isn't really the best way to go about things, especially since you're posting them in the support forums.

If you have a HowTo of your own (not linking to someone else's page), you can post one in the HowTo section of the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=100). If you just have some good links, bookmark them, and then next time someone asks how to do something, then you can post the link in your reply.
