Need help finding app (weather, pictures, news)

I'm creating yet another "digital picture frame" and I'm kinda at a loss of what applications to use as I want to do it a bit differently.

I would like to have it
slideshow pictures (from harddrive or optionally internet)
display local weather (could be RSS feed but would like some eye candy display)
Perhaps have a RSS news scroller along bottom

I started looking around thought maybe something like SuperKaramba
with

I know I have to use KDE which is "memory intensive" however I won't be interacting with the desktop so maybe possibly there's a way to slim down KDE.

I'm looking into ways to change the desktop wallpaper at a preset interval also

What are your thoughts?

this is something I am trying to figure out myself as I just did my first frame. Hoe do you get the slide shoe working with pictures and rss feeds?
