okay, at work (general computer guy at a library, incidentally we use dapper in a dual boot but dapper is only used for maintenance and by the staff) some guy who's pretty obnoxious gave me a blank CD-R and asked if i could put the internet on it for him.

i couldn't get it through to him that the amount of information on the internet probably sums up to a few exabytes and there is no chance a single CD could hold a decent chunk of it. or even that the amount of data going in was to large to be handled by even the fastest connection.

So, tomorrow when he pops in as usual he will recieve a CD with several webpages stating exactly why i haven't done what he asks. its funny, this is the only time i've wasted the space on a CD deliberately.

I can't stand it when people do that. You'll probably get a call soon asking why "The Google" is missing. If he gives you any more trouble, tell him that if he doesn't listen better, you won't help him anymore. Then give him the phone number of an ISP and let him work it out with them.

That's pretty stupid, has this guy been living under a rock the last 10 years? I knew Windows(I assume he uses it) users were ignorant but this beats everything.

You sure he wasn't "taking the ****"? Did you look around carefully for the "candid camera"?

from this guy, this is a step up the intelligence ladder. a few weeks ago he was bragging about his very first... toaster. yes a toaster. this guy is a bit technically challenged at the best of times. but apparently his brother has a computer and he's going to run the CD on that. his brother probably let it go so far because he wanted a laugh, or had the same problem explaining it as i did, not sure.

So it means it is cover by GPL ? can I then go from a toaster to maybe use an oven? Then we can sell it to the guy asking for the internet in a CD LOL

I would have given him a CD with 1 html page on it, and on that page a google search box and a "table of contents" for the internet ( a link to a google directory or so ?).
If you run it of a computer with an internet connection, you could even demonstrate that it really works :)
(and if it doesn't work on his brother's computer, just tell him the problem is wth that computer)

Fail, Daily Show.

But yeah, this is one of the funniest things I've read in a long while.
