When I got this problem I started doing my essays using LaTeX (a text markup program based on the TeX language) - that way I was doing something cool and geeky AND getting at least some work done. ;-)

The worst part is Linux distros come with plenty of work AND play software, so you can convince yourself you're working while you really just mess around.
