- one pair of fila joggers (main shoes);
- one pair of Ugg boots (yeah, they are actually called ugg boots not uggz sorry);
- two pairs of steel capped work boots (one pair I dont wear because they are shiny and people make fun of me);
- one pair of steel capped gum boots;
-one pair of golf shoes

- and one pair of thongs http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5519/ist2142247beachthongs2po9.jpg(I refuse to call them something as stupid as flip-flops)

Off topic: I used to live in Flagstaff, Arizona where the Tevas were invented by a Colorado River (in the Grand Canyon) rafting guide first made them so he could wear something sturdy and comfortable that wouldn't be ruined while shooting the rapids.

yes, but where did the name come from?

raul_
January 7th, 2007, 04:20 PM
Etymology

The term sneaker was first used in 1916 by the United States Rubber Company for the Keds brand, because rubber soles made the shoes quiet. The British English term "trainer" derives from "training shoe".

really? :shock:. thats sounds really daft to me. in my eyes, there is only one good reason to change a name from the original and thats if the original name was inappropriate. trainers are called trainers because they are originally used for sports training, i believe. thats as appropriate name as one as likely to get.

Currently I wear hiking boots all the time. (see picture above for my pair.) I am a fan of boots in general.
For fencing, I wear something like this: (not the same, but similar.)

http://www.scaboots.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/robincuffed.jpg

For sports I wear wilson nemesis IIs. (I've had 5 pairs of this shoe over the last 6 or 7 years. When I used to play tennis a lot, I could wear through the soles in 4 or 5 months, so for a short while I went through them fast.)
I don't think they make them anymore, though. I liked them because they were moccasin comfortable, fairly durable, and really cheap. ($15-30 or so.)

They are called uggz :) (g/f has a pair been joking around that "ugg" is for "ugglee")

It is my understanding that Ugg is short for Ugly or Fugly:

Ugg boots, or simply uggs, is a generic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic) term for a type of sheepskin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheepskin) boot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot) which has been made in Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia) and New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand) for nearly 200 years. They were originally called ug boots or ugh boots, which is short for "ugly"[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugg_boots#_note-0), and sometimes referred to as "fuggs" or "fugly." Due to trademark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trademark) issues (see below (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugg_boots#Trademark_issues)), uggs are often known in the retail world by the more generic term sheepskin boots. Other popular brands of sheepskin boots are Warmbat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warmbat), Emu, Ugly, Uggs-N-Rugs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uggs-N-Rugs) and Aussie Dogs.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugg_boots

HiTec or Nike hikers, last year's models at long discount at Big 5. ;)

They are comfortable & built to last. I have stunted and slightly deformed feet, so the PSI loading is high and cheaper shoes wear out or fall apart fast.

These are geek shoes, though, and I hate that slob Berkeley/Seattle geek look. At my age, you just get mistaken for a bum. The older you are, the less you can get away with, and remember I told you so.

I have to work out a new look, 'cause the girls (shallow creatures that they are) love a sharp-dressin' man, and me & the cat are in sore need of a new mommy.

What are Red Wing and Carhartt like ?

Red Wings were the boot of choice for the working man when I worked at a coal mine. I have had a couple of pair. A very tough but comfortable boot. But that was twenty years ago, and things have probably changed.

They always look something like this:

The new balance are so comfortable! I'd never worn them prior to a tendon injury that I kept reinjuring until I changed my shoes from Adidas.

black uggs

I wore ugg boots (the normal tan color, and the regular shin length), way back in the day from 1988 to 1994.....

These boots used to only be worn by surfers..... they looked best with sweatpants or jeans tucked into them, and a sweatshirt.....

We (surfers) would wear these boot when we drove to the beach to surf in the winter. Surfing on the East Coast (mid-Atlantic) in the winter is freezing, and uggs would be the best thing in the world after a cold surf in 37 degree water and snow on the beach.....

But people who didn't surf would always make fun of ugg boots, now it seems that every soccer mom in the world is wearing these things.

I would get another pair if I ever end up near a cold water coastline again.

I wear REEF boots now (they also have the sheep fur on th inside so they're super warm and comfortable):

http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr169/Arch-newb/b2rb6601_s.jpg

and for regular shoe's these Circa 105's have been my favorite skate shoes ever (discontinued now):

do you have a BW boots pattern 2000, or older /don't know their name/? BW2000, without any questions the best boots i've ever had /better than Lowa's mountain boots afaik/, have got a rather short life-span (after 3 years, i always had to replace/repair them). i heard older boots /i.e. pre-2000/ had great quality.
and i see no reason why not wear them into more official situations- if you will clean& polish them /avoid standard, silicon-based BW stuff for boots/ they should be OK.

Sandals, with socks when its cold.

In the summer I tend to wear trainers (sneakers). For example, last summer I was wearing Adidas ClimaCool trainers. They have a ventilation hole in the soles: wonderful at keeping your feet cool; not so good if you have to walk across a damp grassy field.

In the winter I wear either army "paraboots" or steel-toecapped work boots. Right now I'm wearing a pair of trainer-style shoes with steel toecaps and reinforced soles. I like work boots as they are generally more hard-wearing and so will last longer.

I don't own any "dress shoes" at the moment, it's been quite a while since I've needed to wear anything "nice". So, no night-clubbing for me this weekend. Which suits me just fine: if a club doesn't like my shoes, I don't like the club. End of.

I wear different types of shoes at different times. I usually wear New Balance running shoes. I sometimes wear Merrill hiking shoes. I also have a good pair of hiking boots, but I only wear them on serious hikes.

When I am dressing up, I wear dress shoes. Since I retired, this is less and less often.
