hey,

i'm wondering if you can physically remove the parallel port without killing the main board ?

If so, what is the best way to remove it ?

I just bought a CPU radiator but i can't place it because the back of the parallel port is in the way, as you can see in this pic (http://www.anandtech.com/showimage.html?u=http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/motherboards/msi/k7tpro2/k7tpro2.jpg) (the pink block is the parallel port).

thanks :)

I think so, although it might be more work than it's worth. There might be the possibility that if the board can't sense the parallel port, it might hang or freak out. If you're not emotionally attached to the board, I would say go for it.

Nice board, by the way. What kind is it? I can't read the CPU brace, but I think I recognize the pattern.

If it's possible to remove the port without damaging any of the other components that are on the board, it can be done. Just be very careful not to damage anything in the vicinity of the port, and it should work.

The chipset heatsink has an MSI logo on it, and between two of the PCI slots, it says 'K7T Pro2'.

Sure, remove it. It's just a socket after all, the driving electronics will still be present so the board won't notice at all.

It could be unsoldered, but there will be brackets at each side for support. Carefully cutting it out may be the way to go. Better still, take it to someone who works with PCBs for a living.

thanks for the advice. i'll give it a try :)

the board is a MSI K7T Pro2 (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_list.php?kind=1&CHIP=17&NAME=Archives) running nicely with an AMD Athlon TBird 1.1G and Xubuntu.

Why not get a cpu cooler that fits on the board ?
