oh my. make sure to PM aysiu about that. I'd do it but I'd think that you probably already have done this. But he would know, seeing as it's his site.

I'm pretty sure he'll catch this post. I hope it's not gone anywhere, it was useful and a good read at times as well!

I'll look into it.

Hm. I think it may be a problem with my webhost. I'm hosting several sites with them, and none appear to be up. Their up-time is usually pretty good, but two hours...

Edit: It seems like a pretty major problem, as even their main site is down:

http://www.icdsoft.com/

Greetings to everyone,

We would like to shed some light on the downtime of the forum and icdsoft.com

On Jan/2/2007, the datacenter of SAVVIS Copr. in Boston, where the equipment of ICDSoft is co-located, experienced a network outage, which lasted for about 6 hours.
There is still no official report from Savvis about the reasons for the outage.

Besides ICDSoft, among the affected companies were Lycos Mail / Tripod, the magazines CIO and CSO - basically everyone whose equipment is in the Savvis datacenter in Boston.

The severity of the outage was increased by the continuing connectivity problems in Asia due to the damaged submarine lines after the 26/Dec earthquake in Taiwan. These problems affect the connectivity of US based customers to our Hong-Kong datacenter, which mirrors the main services of ICDSoft.
Due to these US-Asia connection problems, the Hong-Kong mirror of icdsoft.com might have been unavailable for some US locations.

During the outage, we did our best to supply our customers with all the information we had, through our Hong Kong support site: http://hk.suresupport.com/savvis.php

The outage of the Savvis DC in Boston seems to be a result of a failure in the main and backup communication lines in a short period of time. This is unacceptable for such a facility. After we receive their report, we will revise closely their redundancy and failover procedures. We are prepared to take all the necessary measures to ensure the reliability of the service, which may include even moving all our equipment elsewhere.

Maybe one of the ICDSoft employees uses Ubuntu? I think it's weird, too. I didn't contact them about it.

Hello to everyone,

There are some Ubuntu users working at ICDSoft, but this is not how we found this forum :)
Basically, we wanted to provide information about Savvis outage to as many people as possible.

History and follow-ups on the outage can be found here:
http://suresupport.com/savvis.php

As told in the initial information, the outage was caused by failures in two major backbone lines at Boston. The first line failed on Dec/31, and for some reason Savvis did not manage do fix their hardware until Jan/2, when the second line failed. Also, Savvis claim that there was an additional, third failure - of a router.

The management of Savvis abided to connect their Boston datacenter with two more backbone lines - one to be installed immediately, and another within three months. Also, we are revising with them their failover procedures.

One of the reasons we chose this datacenter (it belonged to Cable & Wireless back in 2003 when we started placing servers there), were the advertised datacenter specifications and reliability. When Savvis acquired the US hosting network of CW in 2004, they assured as that the Boston facility will be developed as a high-end colocation and managed-hosting datacenter. We are paying quite high prices on bandwidth/space there, just because we thought that we are buying more reliability.

We will monitor Savvis actions closely by requiring information from them regularly. If they fail to deliver what they promised within the specified timeframe, we are ready to change colocation providers.

If there are any additional follow-ups on the issue, they will be posted on http://suresupport.com/savvis.php as well.

Best regards,
ICDSoft Team

Apparently, there is another outage with my host.

Here's their official message (https://www3.suresupport.com/contact.php?):
There is an ongoing planned maintenance in our SAVVIS data center. The network engineers are performing core router configuration optimization.

The maintenance window is between 1am and 5am EDT. You may experience connectivity issues during this time.

The day after the official Ubuntu release date... not an ideal time to be doing server maintenance, at least from my perspective.

Thanks for your patience, Ubuntu community.

Edit: Everything appears to be back up again.

It seems as if there's a serious outage again of some kind.

Not only can I not access the Psychocats site, but I can't access ICDSoft's main support site either.

I hope it's not down too long.

Aysiu, what about self hosting your website? You need not worry about their uptime. Only yours.

I don't have the chops to maintain a web server myself. I'd probably have way more downtime than any paid-for host.

No one guarantees 100% uptime anyway. Almost all web hosts offer 99.99% uptime.

The amount of bandwidth Psychocats uses, I doubt my ISP would be very happy about it.

Hello to everyone,

Here is more information on the problem reported by aysiu.

Yesterday, we received a few complaints from customers that they experience latency and packet loss to our servers in Savvis. Most of them were customers of Cox.net, but some were using other ISPs as well. We did not detect any problems with our networks - the servers in Savvis were accessible with no packet loss from all locations we checked from, including Europe and Hong Kong.

We escalated the matter to Savvis, and it was fixed an hour later. Although we still do not have an official confirmation on the exact problem, it seems that it was a routing issue between Savvis and some of their peers.

aysiu posted a screenshot of the contact form on our mirror site. Actually, you can see on it our network status notification, where the problem is explained (according to the situation at that point).

Best regards,
