I wouldn't pay too much, given that P4 is going out of the door, and it doesn't support DDR2.

I don't know about dollars and stuff as I am not American...but given what I read, etc..no more than 300 dollars..

Actually I have two systems built on that motherboard Asus P4P800E Deluxe. Good motherboard but I believe it is about 2 yrs old with no support for PCI Express either. So you are stuck using AGP video cards (although there is nothing wrong with that and they are still plentiful). I'm going to assume it is used... I wouldn't pay more than $500 Cdn. tops. That might even be a little high :). Hope this helps.

For what Ubuntu can do on that, I'd pay $700-$1000, I don't care what anybody says, those are quality parts.

Yes, but couldn't you build a better NEW system for $700-1000?

I think $400-500 would be a reasonable price range. Have you checked prices on ebay and such?

That's a pretty decent system, but I could easily take $800+ and build a better (and newer) one. If it wasn't for the DVD burner and the 1 GB of RAM, I'd pay $400-$450 (US). If they weren't there, $300 tops.

Given that I can find an equivalent system in Fry's for ~400 USD, and a 6800 is ~120 USD I'd say 600-650 (its used...) tops. You may not be able to build a system for under 700, but it would at least be upgradable in the future. If you can find a similar system, but with an AMDx2 4200 it would be a good deal for 650.

thanks for the advice guys, this is my main system at the moment, however, i'd rather have a laptop now and need to think about changing my main system. I probably won't end up selling this. I'm on the market for either a really nice laptop or a apple mac :D

It's a decent system, has everything you really need doesn't it? The graphics card is quite a good one i believe and i'd estimate something in the region of £500 or so for the system... what's that, $800-$950?

It's not a uberfast-up-to-date-hardcore-gaming machine but it'll handle most things you could throw at it currently... As always with used machines don't buy it unless you can milk a really good price from the guy - ask him how much he wants for it then raise your eyebrows and offer half :mrgreen:
If you're looking for a new PC (and especially if you want one built to play 1080p video and games like Oblivion at full settings) never ever buy a Pre-Built System! You can always get a better PC custom building it.

Although, if you're getting it dirt cheap from a friend who's decided to make life simple and buy a Mac - why not?

I guess I would pay $600 max for that. Single core processors are getting out of date although I still use one today.

Look for a comparable name-brand from RetroBox.com (http://www.retrobox.com/rbwww/home/). The get computers from companies and turn around and sell them back (without an OS).

They don't have the best searching capabilities but you may be able to find a rough equivalent for a ball-park estimate.
