What desktop manager do you use?
And why?

Xfce4. Why? Because it's light, still looks cool, still got plenty of features, doesn't have buggy multimedia backends, and runs so fast on my new system that I'm in danger of getting whiplash! :)

Gnome, because i love it.
I think that doesn't exist a rational explanation of my choice. :-k
i think that is a some kind of "mental attitude". :mrgreen:

I like using GNOME over KDE. Why, ugg there is reasons why. Not going to carry on to the why's. I used both and like the feel of GNOME over KDE and Xwindows.

I use GNOME because it's the most efficient. I'd use Xfce4 if it had everything I need, but GNOME comes with everything by default (nm-applet, easy to edit preferences, and an easy to change applications menu). Xfce is very nice, but I can't figure out how to edit most things and I can't be arsed to figure it out. I run on 1 GB RAM and a 1.8 Ghz processor so I really don't notice a huge difference in speed between GNOME and Xfce4. Plus GNOME gives me more desktop room, because the top/bottom bars are half the size of Xfce4. And I definitley do make use of that room.
But KDE is a whole different story. I actually just logged out of KDE, because it is noticably slower than GNOME on my computer.

Xfce - my machine can easily handle gnome or kde... but I just don't need all of those things... I need it just simple and straight forward... guess what, I haven't even changed my background wallpaper...

XFce because it's fast on my machines and I can modify it to look better than Gnome or KDE without all of the overhead. You can size or even rmove the panels, by-the-way, and still use it because the menu's are right-click on the desktop.

For me GNOME. It's got all that i need and runs well

Right now I use Gnome. Why? Because it is default in Ubuntu and I wanted to try something new (was a KDE user for quite some time before on many different distros). Ended up being satisfied with Gnome and stayed with it. However, if KDE 4 ends up better then Gnome, I will move back without any second thoughts. Right now Gnome seems a bit better then KDE for me, but I still like KDE too.

Definately gnome. kde feels windows-ish to me. I like the balance of speed and usability in gnome.

at the moment, i'm using kde, but i've used all 3 and they all have their good and bad points :)

I've used all three but settled on Xfce4. I have to say that KDE is my least favorite, even though some of the native apps (like Amarok) are great. Gnome is nice, I like the look and feel, but it is a little sluggish on my older machine. Xfce4 is the overall winner, but I will admit the learning curve was a little steep.

I use gnome. I used enlightenment DR17 for a long time but when compiz first came out I decided to switch to gnome to see what this 3d accelerated desktop was like and I just never switched back. Does anyone happen to know if there is any kind of 3d acceperation available for the enlightenment wm?

Gnome. I find KDE too busy and looks too much like *******. I do like some of the KDE apps , though.

Gnome, I just like the look and feel. Gnome feels like home.
I run Fluxbox on a P3 Dell Latitude laptop but that is from necessity.

Xfce, mostly because I run on an old system. I suspect that I would use it anyway though as I have a preference for lightweight.
Gnome would be my second choice, I never got along well with KDE.

Gnome because it's tidy and I think beryl looks much better with it. Don't have the need for the system settings in kde longer neither, since I now know the other way around. Prefer the terminal for settings cause it's so much faster.

I prefer Kubuntu (KDE). i like to have total control over my system and like playing around with the look and feel of it; Gnome just doesn't give me enough options.

Gnome, Is my desktop of choice and has been for some time now.
The reasons that I choose to you Gnome are for its simplicity, and appearance.
Although I am considering changing, gnomes 'sensible defaults' and lack of configurabilty give me the irks more often than not.
Try changing mail clients for example then accessing nautilus' send to feature. This for want of a better term is 'locked' in favour of Evolution. A known and registered bug on Gnome's Bugzilla for around a year now.
I've been dabbling with XFCE, and quite like it, KDE's appearance is way to plastic for me, and it's overly bloated for my liking, though KDE 4 might well be worth a look.
Cheers.

I used KDE in one distro a while back, it was either the default or my roommate recommended it. It was fine, I had no trouble navigating, and if I remember correctly I liked the look and feel.
I now use gnome. Mainly because it was the Ubuntu default. It took a second to get my bearings, but it was easy enough to figure out. So far with gnome I've been able to accomplish much more than in previous iterations of my computer. I doubt gnome had a direct involvement in this, but it did make me feel comfortable with my computer.
In the next few weeks (after I set up my confusing new Keyboard combo) I plan on slapping Beryl on top of things, see what I can do with that 8)

XFCE4 + Beryl on my Desktop. KDE on my Laptop.
I guess I just prefer it that way!

What desktop manager do you use?
And why?
Gnome. Since Ubuntu comes with it.
My first Linux DE was KDE, first with Knoppix then Mandrake...
Anyway, I had installed debian amd64 alioth, but then went with Ubuntu when it appeared in 2004...
Ok I'm rambling, long story short. When I ditched windows, I didn't want things exactly as I had them... So gnome has 2 bars instead of one, I decided to give it a chance.
More rambling here:
Any short comings I addressed by learning (thanks to these forums mostly) how to do whatever gnome couldn't via commandline. However, that was just recursive folder permissions, which nautilus now supports (yay!) (had copied a lot of data from backed up DVD's and my ntfs formatted drives, which I promptly reformatted as I moved the data to reiserfs. think tower of hanoi... So nested folders with read-only marked files chmod -R saved me...)
Other than that no gnome complaints... I mean come on, auto mounting and the cd/dvd button ejects...Well that was added/fixed long ago (and not unique to gnome I'm sure), but those were the last things I "missed" from windows...
Anyway, I don't see leaving gnome anytime soon. You can get eye-candy with beryl (which I think is cool, love the cube, flame effect, and the app switching...) Compared to screenie's of Vista etc... The colors and all those overdone graphical interfaces, well just makes me wretch,
Gnome is simple, and I like it. I've always preferred a clean interface to flashy 3d buttons and weird layouts etc...

Out of those three I use Gnome because it's the best one and because my computer can handle it. Xfce is ok, but I've never liked KDE.

I'm always switching between DE:s and WM:s, the cycle is usually KDE <-> GNOME <-> IceWM <-> OpenBox. :D
Currently I'm using Gnome, as for why, I use it because I like the simplicity and the good desing.
On my older machine I have IceWM ;)

there should be an option for multiple choices, I use Gnome and XFCE on a regular basis, Gnome on my desktop and xfce on my laptop (I also use fluxbox quite a lot but I spose that doesn't really count as a DE:P)

Gnome, Ubuntu's default. I've used KDE and is too similar to windows (too complicated for me). I don't like configurations, just enjoy things working, I don't want to waste my time thinking about the system (this is also the main reason I moved from windows).

right now, i have kde and openbox on my laptop (my desktop is too old for aything but openbox). openbox, with its customizable right-click windows and scrollable desktops is all i really need, and its fast. i don't understand how anyone can think kde is like windows. it's so customizable, it can be almost like anything. i have kde looking and acting like openbox and it's just about as fast (i use mostly kde apps in both).
which one of these two looks like windows?

I use Xfce4 because my system is older (PIII, 500MHz, 256M) and I like the responsiveness and the options in configuring the desktop better than the others. I also like the ability to have absolutely no panels on the screen and yet fully functional as the main menu is availalbe via right-click or bound to the Windows key! Once I get a chance to install gdesklets or torismo then I'll be happier.
I like using Gnome at time because it sometimes has a nicer feel than Xfce and the modem applet makes it easy to get online.
KDE is good if I dont' want to thunk much about it, since I have been using Windows and have to use Windows at work there isn't much of a "shift of gears" when going from Windows to KDE. My next system will probably be KDE because I'm looking to use more KDE/QT-based programs but right now it's not worth installing KDE.
Why isn't there a 4th choice; (d) All of the above?

I voted KDE, since that is what I use 90% of the time. I am always switching DEs/WMs, so the point is really moot, but I have to have Amarok. ;)

I use Xfce4 out of personal preference, I think its simple and to the point. Does everything I expect it to, does it without bloat, extras, or things I don't need. Just get things done, does them logically and does them very quickly and I like that.

KDE = :D
Gnome = :neutral:
Xfce = Good if you have an old computer or don't need a fully fledged DE
Why KDE?
- It's the most feature full
- The most customizable
- KDE supports a vast number of other projects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_KDE_applications)

I use KDE, of course ;) It generally behaves like I do, and is organized the way I tend to organize things. KDE is generally great, but Kubuntu isn't as mature as other kde-centric distributions (to which it is oft compared), and it shows. It'll get there though, sooner or later... (hopefully the former!)

XFce4, Works pretty well on my machine. I had 128mb RAM so GNOME was a little bit heavy for me, but with XFce4 it worked better. And now that I upgraded to 320 MB I am starting to love it even more! hahaha

Gnome because it came with Ubunutu tried KDE a while ago, it was alright. Gnome took no time to learn, settings etc. took a little while but only a google. Beryl's nice looking and is fast enough on my old scrap heap. I like the look of gnome as well with a a couple of little tweaks without getting too involved in configs.

Gnome, because it uses general applications, and doesn't have it's own version of EVERY piece of software imagineable (and doesn't give them identical names either).

Gnome.
Reasons: because it's Ubuntu's default, because is less cluttered and because it's more work oriented.

Gnome's idea of packaging software is just to grab a bunch of software made by different developers and throwing it all together. KDE sits down and takes the time and precision to develop all their software themselves.
KDE = order
GNOME = chaos

Gnome, because it uses general applications, and doesn't have it's own version of EVERY piece of software imagineable (and doesn't give them identical names either).What I hate more is how just about every program they have also starts with "k". I understand the brand-recognition aspect but it makes somebody sould like their studdering or something!
I have thought about a KDE-only system just to see what it would be like (KOffice instead of OpenOffice, Krita instead of Gimp, Karbon14 in stead of Inkscape.. they are even working on a DV-editor though the name slips me right now).
