For the last 3 weeks I have been using openbox as a stand alone DE, and so far i'm pretty impressed it's so quick and stable. But it's not a common preference since it does not have or support several common features. Anyway, do you use any?

I use EDE (http://ede.sourceforge.net/page/) on some virtual machines. It's a light DE using a modified FLTK (http://www.fltk.org) toolkit.

openbox is a window manager not a desktop.

openbox is a window manager not a desktop.

It can be used either as a replacement for your current window manager, or as a standalone desktop environment.

For the last year, I have been using UWM which is a minimalist window manager. It is very streamlined with no window title bars. It makes full use of all three mouse buttons in a very intuitive arrangement. It doesn't have things such as icons, task bars, or menu editors; it uses menus accessible with the mouse buttons (and you must edit configuration files manually to change the menus). It weighs in at about 1 megabyte, making it perfect for an older machine with limited resources.

I highly recommend giving it a chance, it is truly unique and the only negative I have to say is that, once you've grown accustomed to UWM, all other WMs will seem awkward and kludgy.

You are not using the term desktop environment correctly.

no, apart from the early days, i've only either used kde or gnome. i've tried enlightenment(too fancy), blackbox(too minimal),windowmaker(difficult to use and feel comfortable with), twm(horrible), icewm(good points, but too minimal).

Ah, the beauty of E17. Just look at it (http://enlightenment.sourceforge.net/Enlightenment/Screenshots/DR17_User_Screenshots/index.html).

I once used Twin - it's sorta like a very simple desktop environment and window manager, except it's completely text-based and can only run text-based applications. Check it out though, it's the ultimate in lightweight.
