View Full Version : Talk about your Signature/Signature Link(s)...at the current moment in time

RAV TUX
December 23rd, 2006, 03:00 AM
While most users signatures are pretty straight forward this is a dedicated thread for members to post, discuss and share aspects of their signature...and also archive constantly evolving signatures.

A discussion thread about Ubuntu Forum members signatures, because like Avatars signatures give us a reflection of each other...

post your signature at the current moment in time....because if your like me, my signature always changes:

Is your Signature link about Ubuntu, Linux, Opensource?

Does your Signature link, link to family/work friendly material?

Why did you choose your Signature/Signature links?

For staff, why did you choose your image?

Does your Signature link strive to give technical help? be funny?

Or Other....?

I will post my signature at the moment(since it will change):

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2314/snapshot24kr5.png (http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2314/snapshot24kr5.png)

I'll start with mine:

image: illustrates one of the OS's I actively use Sabayon 3.2 (DVD install)
line items x2: acknowledges the other OS I use Ubuntu (as a registered user), also that I am a registered Linux user...
Links x2:
first link, links to my purevolume.com page...what can I say I love good music and the purevolume player works flawlessly in Linux.
second link, House Rabbit Society link...I love bunnies, my wife and I have 3,...If you need a pet adopt a bunny and your soul will resonate at a higher level;)

I just read David Platt's book "Why software sucks" and my new signature reflects what the book is about, and something that I've been in agreement with before. The purpose of software is to empower the user, not the developer. So "good" software makes the user more effective, is easy to use, and is interesting. "Bad" software is confusing, makes the user memorize obscure codes and commands, and combinations of clicks... and ugh...

So yeah, that's my sig

Mine is pretty boring actually. As you can see below, it's just my system specs. Not much more to say about it. On other forums, I usually have a heap more such as books, site URLs, currents projects and games I'm currently playing. Seeing as Ubuntu Forums only allow VERY limited space for signatures, that's all I can fit in.

As of 0330 Zulu 23 December 2006, my signature is simply:

Registered Ubuntu User #8456
orz

I'm sure that everyone knows, or at least understands, what the registered user is... orz, for those wondering is how I feel when helping my friends and my wife's friends with their computers... it's how I deal with people at work.

O.K. take a line from the center-right of the 'o' and draw to the center of the 'r'. From the 'r' connect to the top-left of the 'z'. Yes, I am banging my head upon the floor... no, I'm not bowing or doing other dirty things, so STOP IT[-( perverts... LOL

Anyway, that's it.

I have an Intel EM64T with hyper-threading, which as I understand emulates a dual-core in some way. One which I don't understand.

In any case, the performance is very good, even without the SMP enabled kernel (which enables hyper-threading). I don't have any benchmarks to compare, but I'm quite satisfied with the speed.

RE: Avatar/Sig
It is mostly due to laziness, but I enjoy featuring a different South Park character as my avatar, just because there are a lot to pick from, and the construction-paper appearance looks fairly clean on the forum. That, and I don't have to pretend that I put much thought into them.

I used to have a bunch of help related signature links, but after a while I really doubted that they benefited anyone significantly. Although, a reminder of documentation centers (wiki/UDSF) probably prevents a lot of unnecessary posts.

When Christmas is done, I will probably go back to a blank signature. More space for reading posts.

mod-free was originally a gift to ubuntu forums made by rich (richabarma).
as you know there are many things that you are NOT allowed to talk about at ubuntu forums, so rich made a forum that you can talk about almost ANYTHING (except posing spam) , god, sex, drugs, everything you can think about.
most of the members at mod-free are also a members from ubuntu forums.
you can talk about threads that had been closed unjustly (in your point of view) at ubuntu forums.
and a place to talk your heart out, to spill your feelings about every aspect of life.
almost unmoderated forum, and a window in like behind the scenes of ubuntu forums.
like a resolution center when everyone can talk, and you cannot be silenced by anyone.

Linux For Clinics - is a project to make a Linux distro for clinics with every free open sourced program we can find for clinics.
in this place you can talk about doctors/medical stuff and contribute\find a programs that could be added to the project which will be Free to use and change.
(I am not active in this project at this time but it's a great project run by a friend of mine and a member of ubuntuforums and mod-free Charlie.

(to the mods : I hope that this time you won't edit/delete my post cuz the thread title says I can talk about my sigs).

Linux For Clinics is as Max explained except that I am active in as I host the site and I am a forum admin.

Wow, this has put me on a mission to make my signature a bit better, but anyway; mine's really easy, I have the links to register at Ubuntu Counter, Linux counter, for people encouraging them to stand up and wave the penguin proudly around! (Clean thoughts please) then I have my account as registered linux user link, to see me. Wheee. I only have 1 box and 1 distro, that's displayed there, along with my current kernel and then what my box actually is :)

Of course, the Kernel will change shortly, I'm just compiling a 2.6.19 ;)

'There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path' ~ Morpheus

My signature is based on two things:
1. I really liked the Matrix trilogy and
2. I think this statement is very true for many people.

Lots of people seem to really know where they want to go and how they want to get there but only few - in my opinion - are actually really walking the road they talk about.

The first link in my sig is to my CG portfolio website, 3D Teapot. (http://www.3dteapot.co.uk) The name 3D Teapot came from my love of 3D and Tea, plus the Utah Teapot has become a standard object in most 3D software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Teapot) so I thought 3D Teapot was quite relevant!

Second link is to Defective By Design's website because I hate DRM and it makes me angry to see that so many people are being traped by it and not knowing.

My sig is merely a demonstration that sigs should be small, compact and ignorable if they're to be there at all, which in general they might as well not be.

I absolutely HATE inconsiderate, space-hogging, graphics-laden sigs that do nothing but add to the difficulty of reading a thread.

It's so bad on some boards that I've had to turn off sigs completely because for some stupid, five-word post, I have to scroll through about 20% of a screen's worth of idiocy and animated .GIFs. I'm working on a theory that sig size is inversely proportional to user value, but I haven't quite gotten it finalized. ;)

On that board, I changed my sig to:

You all became so much smarter and more mature when I turned off sigs and avatars! Wow, it's like magic!

...when I turned off sigs and avatars in my User CP there.

Sigs are like jokes: Most aren't that good to begin with and they really get annoying with repeated exposure.

And, on from my previous post in this thread.....:p

It`s well & truly "after the year" now and my sig and avatar have long since changed since the time of that previous post.

I asked loads of dumb "seeming" questions when i first discoverd Ubuntu last year, although in my defense it was only a few months after turning a pc on for the very first time.
I knew(know) less than most here about these boxes of wires n stuff but even though i asked loads of questions i also did loads of googling & reading just trying to get my head round everything......computers in general of course and not just Ubuntu.

Unfortunately i watched quite a few other people who should have in fact known better, come complaing about having to do any sort of reading to get their new OS`s working.:-k
People who`d used computers for years & years were whining about how much they had to read or how complicated it was so i came across the 2 places in my sig and thought they`d possibly be of some use to some people, including myself of course:p

:)

I'm building the SVN version usually once a week or so.

There are more Fluxbox users who use Ubuntu as a base than I might have thought. Mind you, there are a lot of users who have old machines and they are constantly being told to try Fluxbox (not bad advice, really).

My signature stayed the same for a long time and then I removed it and slowly added some things back and finally decided in the end to put as much information as I could. Some people have told me they got a lot of useful information from those links, so I figured I should leave them.

Info on the saintly Billy here:

I need no warrant for my being, and no word of sanction upon my being. I am the warrant and the sanction.

It's a quote from Ayn Rand's Anthem, just after the main character rediscovers the word "I"Interesting to see how signatures change over time...

My sig links to my blog. It's mainly about interesting or unusual stuff I find in the trash or in thrift stores. I'm currently posting someone's journal I found on an old computer I found in the trash. I had to make two extra blogs for all the entries!

sisco311, nice signature, but like you said, I'd be careful with it. You might want to rephrase it to something like this...

A fun night with a ubuntu: unzip; strip; touch; finger; mount; fsck; more; yes; umount; sleep; exit

I'm a bum, and basically I need some help getting an iPod. Hopefully someone else on here wants one and doesn't mind trying to get it free by doing the offers. My signature is devoted to that right now...

My signature comes straight from the 'Bye, Ubuntu' Thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=473601).

I found it a rather funny comment on how the thread has progressed.

Would you post your second line here also in English?

Mine is in response to the vast legion of users to pound away at their keyboards and then claim that they've "fixed it".

You know what - sometimes they have.

Which scares me.

That actually happened to me last night. Trying to fix my broken filesystem on my MP3 player, ran FSCK, hit some random keys and its works perfectly now :D

Merely system specs... It was much easier putting it in rather than re-typing it for everyone when I posted a question in the support forums...

Thinking of changing it to something involving cynicism and witty banter, but.... meh.

Mine is pretty straight forward:

Estadísticas del reino animal: 1 de cada 3 conejos de Birmania... escupe una tostadora

Translation:

Animal kingdom statistics: 1 every 3 rabbits from Birmania... spits a toaster

Clear enough?

Why do people persist measuring everything with money, it doesn't even have an SI unit.

At this moment in time, mine just has a link to my howto and a comment related to the Fluxbox menu on Gutsy Gibbon. I used to have a number of Fluxbox-related links, but I had to trim my signature down to include the comment (I was over the forum limit). Oh well.

HOWTO: get a Fluxbox menu (and customization) (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=371144)
(updated to include a simple procedure to setup a more complete menu on Gutsy Gibbon)
