View Full Version : How to get back the controversial artwork ?

I don't want to start a debate on how appropriate or not the old controversial artwork was but.... how do I get it back ?

It's in a package called I think Ubuntu Monthly Calendar or something like that, open up Synaptic and run a quick search for calendar, you'll find it, then just select it as your background after it finishes installing.

why was it controversial??

HiddenWolf
November 10th, 2004, 10:46 PM
There are some people on the background image that show some skin. Not nudes, but a naked chest, arms around shoulders, etc.

It is a peace of art, but disregards the fact that in many parts of the world it is seen as (very) inappropriate to show semi-nudes in public.

Obviously, for a linux distribution, it is unwise to include artwork that could offend people.

It's not really that it is "offensive" for most people but more that they would never dare install it in the workplace (and with all the lawsuit problems we are seeing these years, I tend to agree with them). However, I liked the picture which really had the right ubuntu feeling and would like to have it at home.

Look for this package in synaptic : ubuntu-calendar - The Ubuntu Calendar features monthly updated artwork and themes
Install it
Computer -> System Configuration -> Login Screen Setup
Click on the graphical greeter tab
The "controversial" GDM should be in the list
Select it and save.

Same for the background :)

The Ubuntu-calendar update for November is probably the most risque yet. Are they going to keep getting more controversial? Honestly, it doesn't bother me, I think it makes sense for the distro. Human togetherness and all that

TravisNewman

kamstrup: if you think the avatar is funny, you should check out Steve Oedekerk's movies. ThumbWars, Thumbtanic, Batthumb, Frankenthumb, the Blair Thumb, GodThumb... He's the guy responsible for the (sub-par, in my opinion) Ace Ventura movies. He made Kung-Pow a few years back, a very funny kung-fu movie parody, and one menu entry on the dvd was "The Panicked Thumb" and it took a shot from Thumb Wars (where my avatar came from) where this thumb just runs across the screen yelling "We've been hit!" Hilarious stuff.

xsos: yes, they are very artistic. There's no prurient intentions at all with these pics, it's all about the art and the humanity in Ubuntu.

Personally, I was offended by the artwork.

I mean, you couldn't see nipple or *anything*. I hit my head against the monitor getting close enough to check.

*LOL* I knew someone would chime in with that one eventually.

They should have an ubuntu-calendar-mundane, an ubuntu-calendar-risque and an ubuntu-calendar-softcore-porn.

OK, no, not really. But it was fun while it lasted right?

There are however many cultures and religions which do not approve of the showing of skin, hair, or other body parts.

It is not wise to **** off people with these kinds of things, if it can be avoided.
People like us, who feel it is harmless, and like it (it is my desktop at the moment) can easily install it, without any issue's at all.

And, i agree, you'd have someting to explain to your supervisor in most companies. :-)

TravisNewman

Oh yeah, I definitely agree there. I wouldn't want the wallpaper as default (anymore at least) for a work environment especially, and we have to make it accessible to everyone. though I don't understand why it's offensive, it has to be respected.

It gets worse. There's one religion which has almost 2 billion followers that specifically forbids the portrayal in any way of human beings (clothed or otherwise) or any other living entity (dead or alive).

I'm talking about Islam of course

The reasoning is that any portayal of animals (humans or otherwise) can lead to worship of something other than the one God.

Some Christian subgroups have similar clauses.

In the US, a screen saver showing a gun blowing someone's head off would be cool, while showing a tit is a sin and should be censored.

I don't think I know anyone who has ever held a gun (I am Canadian) while most people I know have had sex. Go figure!

I was not offended.. I just thought those pics were... dunno.... stupid.. Like those Beneton comercials. Heapy people of all races, hugging, smiling..just too corny for my taste.
And girls were too flat chested for my taste

Yeah, totally agreed. She's too skanky for me. The first 2 years she was popular she was super-hot. I think the "Come on over" video was the last time I thought she was hot.

No reason to dist-upgrade unless you're upgrading to hoary really. The natural dependency of ubuntu-calendar will upgrade you to the december image.

This quote in all technicality is wrong. I am a Muslim myself, so I would know.

What's wrong is to put up pictures of say, Britney Spears all over your wall, on your bed, in your closet, and simply everywhere, and revere her as your idol/god.

Trust me, we have pictures of our family/friends in the house, and there is nothing wrong with doing so. You've simply been misinformed of this, or misinterpreted it when reading.

I haven't followed the issue. I installed it not knowing what it was, hearing of it, or seeing this thread. Deleted it imediately. Not in the least professional but then neither is a brown gtk theme, no complete icon theme, and the blury, flat, dull industrial-engine. Distros default gtk should already have easily been replaced with the smooth-engine, IMO. BUT! it's just my opinion.

Hear hear! I second the move to Smooth! I've been trying (but to no avail) to make a Smooth theme using the Ubuntu palette. The palette does not have enough light & neutral colors in it; they are all too shadowy or too highlight-y. SmoothGNOME looks real nice on Ubuntu though. :D Maybe we can just replace the blue highlights with Ubuntu-browns?

You got to be fair though. They can't only show the girls. Its not fair to all the female Ubuntu users. Besides, mature adults, comfortable with their sexuality, can appreciate the human body of both genders. Keep in mind its artwork. If you want smut, I recommend http://skins.be. 8-[ (Please keep in mind I'm not trying to flame. I think most of my comments in this thread are more of an inflated joke than anything else, though some may find a kernel of truth in it.)
