I would like to have my own blog - a personal home page with various information regarding me. What blogging system can you recommend me? :KS

Wordpress is the obvious choice (http://wordpress.org/). It's themeable and very customisable with some HTML/PHP knowledge. It has all the necessary features, such as comments, pingbacks, RSS etc. Anything that doesn't come as standard (such as Google Analytics) can be added as a plugin. The Ubuntu SE site uses wordpress: http://parker1.co.uk/satanic/

You need a MySQL/PHP available on your hosting service, or you can blog for free on the Wordpress site.

I'm liking wordpress atm... just need to put something decent on it! :)

Was thinking about removing most of the modules from drupal and using that... I Love drupal for some reason :D

I'll throw my hat in with Wordpress as well. It is highly customizable with plugins and themes and has solid community support as well as sees active development. I've been running my personal site on it for close to two years and have had zero problems with regards to upgrades and whatnot. :D

I havent been blogging for long but I use Blogspot (blogger.com). It is quite simple to set up, has customizable templates and such. Works for me :D . Hope this helps.

Yup, I just managed to create my blog - http://zdravko-monov.blogspot.com/

I didn't like Wordpress, because of the strange domain and URL - it just kept concatenating the domain and the user name, thus producing strange and rather inconvenient URL's. I hope I didn't make a mistake by choosing Blogspot. Maybe it isn't that sophisticated like Wordpress?

I use Wordpress as well. It's great and free. And I believe it's open source, too.

Not a mistake in my opinion :) If you find it doesnt have enough features or something you can alway make a blog on Wordpress. You are not tied down to one or another and they are both free. I just chosed blogspot because it was simple and easy to set up :D . Good luck with your blog!

A lot of people seem to like wordpress. I messed around with it this summer a little bit (I just installed it on my local "webserver" in my house) but finally ditched it. There are literally hundreds of different themes to choose from, but I didn't like most of them. I tried to customize the few that I did like (the default theme is rather nice actually) but it ended up being too complicated for me. The final nail in the coffin was the fact that there wasn't a good way to put up a photo album and have it integrated within the wordpress theme. I tried several different photo album plugins but none of them worked the way I wanted them too.

With that said, the actual blogging system in wordpress is great. It did exactly what I wanted it to do.

I agree, WordPress is a great choice to start your own blogging server.

I'm on Wordpress.com right now and I like it. I detest their WYSIWYG post editor, though ... very buggy for me, and hard to use. I usually switch to the code view right away.

As a google fan myself, I don't know what this craziness is all about. Google only bought blogspot because they liked it and they wanted to keep it alive. It's not like it's actually a product that Google created. Though they might end up swallowing it like they did Writely (ie. Google Docs and Spreadsheets).

That said, I too loved blogspot when I demo-ed it, it was nice. I don't really need the complexity or customizability of wordpress at the moment. Actually, I dont even have an active blogspot blog. Waiting till I have a little more free time before I start one.

I just don't understand how to generate a good-looking URL for my blog in wordpress. It just doesn't allow dots?

I think I managed it. I didn't have to write anything in the domain field - just leave it as it is with the user name!
