View Full Version : What do you do when you're bored?

Simple topic. We all get bored from time to time. Some of us (*cough*me*cough*) are bored almost all the time. What do you do when you're bored?

I usually migrate 5 feet from this chair onto my cough and turn on the TV. When I'm feeling creative, I'll try something new. Like, the other day, I read up on Python. I've failed math in every grade, and haven't even done geometry yet. So... yeah. Programming can be hard for me. But since I was bored and had nothing better to do, I wrote a small program. HTML is fun as well.

My latest trip when I'm bored is to learn how to make maps for OpenArena, and learn how to use blender.

Is this specifically computer-related boredom?

I like to cruise around town...maybe kick up a little ruckus if there aren't any police around. :)

Watch TV
Play/Write some music

Out of curiosity, what do you code? I'm a programmer myself, but I'm always stuck with the blank page syndrom: I never know what to code "for fun"...

tribaal: I usually just find something that I need, or copy someone else ;) Like for instance, recently I decided to work on a configurable System Panel similar to USP in Python.

But actually, I decided lately I want to get back into C++ after being in Ruby and Python for the last while.

Although, yes, I have that problem A LOT too, but most of the times I can find something to do... That's why I wish I was older and could get a job coding (I'm not even old enough to go to college yet)... So I would have a deadline and something to always be working on.

I used to go to The Ottobar but now I live in NC. :(

With the kids I rarely have a boring moment but music is the answer when it does happen.

Pretty much the same thing with console video games (ps2, etc) and digital art thrown into the mix. When I'm at my most bored I'll usually work on making a desktop wallpaper. I post the most recent ones on my website (http://kamuy.fundungeon.info).

nope, idle hands.

actually, what i do when i'm really bored, is read through all of fuscia's posts to find a good one to use as my signature. i'm thinking about changing it to "openbox is to fluxbox as porn is to star wars" or something. i can't remember how it goes exactly.

Why don't you get into some kind of project and code that? Useful and fun at the same time :)

What about teams!?! - Team playing is probably illegal in most countries, if not immoral.

Well, it all really depends on the state of boredom:

"Total ******* boredom":

This happens only once in a year at maximum. If however, the day happens to be the day of total boredom, I do nothing, because I am far too unmotivated to even take a shower.

"Distracting boredom":

This is the most common boredom for me, it means: I am not really bored, but I am looking for an excuse to stop debugging ;)

In that case, I:
- visit Heise, Golem and Prolinux (German IT / Linux Newssites)
- look at the Cafe and Backyard (and sometimes the Feisty forums) here
- go to OpenBC/Xing and look for new messages in my groups, occasionally post something
- check my bank account online (just to see that there is not much left ;))

"2-player boredom":

This effectively means my girlfriend is here and we are undecided about what to do, so we usually:
- watch DVDs
- have sex ;)

Eventually I conclude that boredom is a phenomena that has too be investigated further in the future ;)

That sounds even better than the team pocket pool idea!

Well yeah, that is exactly what I'm trying to do. But then I have to find something I'm really interested in, otherwise I'll drop out before contributing anything... :(

So... That's why I'm learning GTKRadiant and Blender, I'll be able to contribute in yet another way (making 3d stuff and maps for games).
I suggest you guys try out OpenArena (http://openarena.ws/), it's really nice (well basically a fully free version of Quake3).

It's a good time killer, too :)

That sounds even better than the team pocket pool idea! - I think it maybe a German or European variation of pocket Billiards/Pool. I think the rules are the same, and the end result is the same.

Ah the programming blank page effect, the above post is right I'm never bored of ideas, only distracted enough to think I have nothing fun to do.

when I get right into it, I'm filing my time with Dohickey (dohickey.sourceforge.net) I'll sometimes post inspiring ideas on other peoples mailings lists and I have a plan to integrate scanners into hal to make them far easier to use with ubuntu.

To those that want to make drivers: gah, you may need to learn some interesting things.

When bored, I play around with Ubuntu and Debian...tweaking, modifying, and learning.

Forum runs, video searching, and computer gaming are also a personal favorite to conquer boredom (primarily the gaming).

<sigh> I wish I had time to be bored.

Hang out here, play video games, draw, read/think about the mysteries of the universe in this order depending on time. Since I am always on line I am always logged in here for when I get sick of what I am doing, which is like getting bored, right?

I write and map out adventures for Dungeons and Dragons, Rifts, or other Table top Roleplaying games.

If I'm not in the mood for that, I draw, play video games or go for a walk. Lately its just been the video games cause my buddy gave me Disgaea, and I have become addicted.
