Hi,
can I just add software that I would like to see packaged into Ubuntu to the wiki page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Teams/Science)?

Thanks,
Timmie

Well, to keep that page fairly uncluttered I would rather see discussion about the app here first. Once we've verified that people want it, it's not already in Debian, and that we can package/distribute it then we can move it to that list. What packages did you have in mind?

The best way to add a package is learn the basics of debian package management. Send some emails to some MOTUs for some advice. Create the package with some help from your friends, then submit the package yourself.

Becoming a MOTU is rather straightforward depending upon the package. This is the best to add a package. MOTUs are parat-timers, and don't respond very much to user requests.

Well, that's sorta true. MOTU generally don't have time to package up everyones requests for them. But on the other hand, you certainly don't have to become a MOTU to contribute. We have uploaded about 30 new packages to Feisty over the last 2 months. These are user-contributed packages from the MOTU REVU (http://revu.tauware.de) system. People are more than welcome to ask help from the MOTU (#ubuntu-motu on irc.freenode.net is the best place) on packaging. We also wrote the Ubuntu Packaging Guide (http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/packagingguide/C/) to help people learn how to package.

So ya! Packaging is a great way to learn how your OS is built and contribute back to the community that gave you Ubuntu :-)

P.S. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages/New and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages/REVU are good resources for this.
