View Full Version : Why the "Ubuntu Studio" section was closed.

Since this will no doubt be asked a couple of times I decided to create a thread.

MetalMusicAddict, can you explain this decision a bit more. I don't get it. It seems Ubuntu Studio is about an open source system based on Ubuntu which purpose is to deliver authoring tools for audio, video and graphics. The first thing needed (and probably one of the only thing missing in Ubuntu now) for audio is an rt-kernel, and this thread was about that.
Most of the other thread were very much about audio tools for authoring and hardware issues. It had nothing to do with most of the thread that we find in multimedia & video, which don't relate to authoring tools.
So how the previous forum was creating confusion and how is this one more appropriate?

Thanks

The Ubuntu Studio project has evolves since its inception. It started out as a WIKI page on how to tweak Ubuntu for audio production. It has since transitioned into becoming ints own installable disk whos focus is much more than audio now.

This change is something people have not realized even though Ive explained it many times.

THIS (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1897932#post1897932) thread is just the most current thread to continue this confusion. This is also no fault of the thread creator. We have had many people coming to our development IRC channel thinking that because this thread was in the "Ubuntu Studio" section that it was our responsibility. The packages in the thread are in no way related to the work we are doing.

So with the constant confusion and in a effort to make a break from the old project I asked to have it removed.

We will have our first release in Febuary along-side U/X/Kubuntu.

If you would like more info ask here, join us on IRC at #ubuntustudio on Freenode or visit our WIKI (http://ubuntustudio.org/).

So that's why we haven't heard from Luneo (the Music packages... thread starter), since you asked him to contact you on irc over a week ago...

[Edit:]

MMA, I don't think it is a good idea to close the Ubuntu Studio sub-forum, it is too long before you will be releasing an .iso. I believe that you are diluting & confusing the followers of Ubuntu Studio. Until they have the actual distro' .iso they only have that sub-forum to focus them, now they are lost in the multitude of sound & video problems, this is not where they belong.

As the release day approaches you will be able to amp up the impatient first adopters through their own forum, the same place that we should be able to use to support whatever alternatives we are into, re music production until & even after Ubuntu Studio has been released.

So whats why? I have had no contact with him either.

Trust me. It was adding greatly to the confusion and was better that the section was closed. It also could have been renamed, The section needed to not be associated with the project. In the end, I did whats best for the project.

We will have our own forums open in a couple of weeks. All us multimedia nuts will have a place soon. It will however focus on Feisty

No problem. Its been way more work than alot of people realize. Unlike most of the other spin-offs we work with Ubuntu. Sometimes its easy to not work within a system and do your own thing. So us working within the Ubuntu system has its good and bad points. In the end though, everyone will benefit from our work. ;)

EVEVERYONE is urged to keep an eye on the WIKI (http://ubuntustudio.org/) and join us on IRC. Our site and forums will also be up in the coming weeks.

Heres some small screenshots of the work-in-progress theme.

Im glad to see users move around. I don't see it as a "us" against "them" situation.

Er... I don't understand! So let me get this straight - for the short term, there appears to be no forum discussion on Ubuntu-studio?

Correct. There was actually no chat about the project in that section for quite some time.

We will have our own forums up soon.

What gripes me is that I was able to help and be helped, (Luneo is the Man!) and this Ubuntu Studio forum just
disappeared, without trace, redirection or explanation (until enough people voiced their concerns.)
I doubt a forum covering both audio and video can be as effective as dedicated ones, due to the massive problems existing for both mediums, forcing the desparate to wade thru reems of info that is of little value for the moment, and making it more difficult to help people with (the few) things I have been successful
in implementing...but good luck, and I'll try to see when new forums appear, and support them when possible.
Have a great 2007!
