Why there is no like "GOOD" 3D game for linux, good story, graphical etc for linux. I think if there some game come out for linux only, people will start to use more linux and it will be more enteractive to use linux beside using emulation of windows, etc,, i know im a newb to linux still but there probly a reason that ( A community, group ) doesnt make a hardcore game ?

srgess,

Do Doom 3, Quake 4, Unreal Tournament 2004 (and some other version), and Neverwinter Nights (all of these native Linux games), among others, not count? This topic has been discussed 'til people's faces turned blue, search the forums.

I think it is more a question of economics. There are free and very good games available for linux. But if you are spending a lot of time and money making a game, you are going gear it towards the most potential customers. Once Linux gains more ground (as in market share of computers that run games), then the playing field might change.

For people that say there are no good Linux games, then they must not know about these games (just to name a few):

Nexuiz http://www.nexuiz.com
Warsow http://www.warsow.net
Bzflag http://www.bzflag.org
Wesnoth http://www.wesnoth.org/
Netpanzer http://netpanzer.berlios.de/
Cube http://www.cubeengine.com/

TransFusion http://www.transfusion-game.com/
SuperMaze http://www.indiesatwork.com/

Those are windows game too, i mean only linux. and yeah Fully216 those are not bad but i mean like Nexuiz is close to quake/unreal. Yeah i know it cost lost of money creating game and time. But some community could make publicity from their game for money(ex: Google) to at least pay for their time developed the game etc.. i dunno :-k . One thing i could say is if 1 game is incredible insane linux only, windows gamers are gonna start migrate to linux etc,.. free community gonna get bigger and bigger. Like myself i like way much linux in general because its free and it have already a big community helping updating, but i keep windows for the only one reason, gaming.

You forgot Tremulous (http://www.tremulous.net), True Combat: Elite (http://www.truecombatelite.net), Flightgear (http://www.flightgear.org), and a few tons of others :)

To answer the original question: games are not made for Linux because Linux does not represent a big enough market right now.

No, you need hundreds of "hot" games to please the tastes of people, the average consumer will never switch operating systems just because one cool game is available for Linux only.

I think cross-platform software like Firefox, OpenOffice, and Gaim do more to encourage migration that Linux-only software.

I dunno, myself gaming, if i saw a game on an other platform, first of all i will ask my friend, read net if linux is hard to install and download and probly try it. At this point the gamer will see linux pretty good and talk to other people that is insane. I dunno if you know the game Farcry and the upcoming next engine same game Crysis, imagine that Crysis was only linux game, that would push out any gamer to install linux 100% sure of that.

I love it when someone starts a thread about how there aren't any games for Linux. I always find new ones I haven't tried yet.

still would be nice if i didnt have to boot into windows to play a majority... wait all of my games. Sure there are some cool games on linux, but the fact is that games like guild wars, americas army, wow (even though it works fine on wine/cedega) counter strike + steam games in general, etc etc etc are all on windows only.

2.5 was the last stable version for linux, and now they are up to 2.7. They canceled all further ports of the game to linux and mac after 2.5

I guess Bill gave Bush lots of money to make U.S army cancel the Linux/Mac ports ;)

CDogs, awesome game. Real fun to play if you have a little brother around who suddenly becomes very good at the game for no reason at all.

Wasn't the game meant to boost army recruitment? Did they decide that Linux and Mac geeks weren't worth recruiting?

yeah that was the overall goal of the game, but they dont ask for your address or phone number or any other personal information to sign up and play, and its a really fun, / realistic / tactical game with a ton of cool maps, not to mention a very large player base... and non to mention free

im currently addicted to half life 2 death match (and its mods) so i would like do a backflip if suddenly valve came out with a version of the source engine for linux, even though i doubt it will happen, a man can dream =P

Thanks for the thread srgess.

As Christmas is nearly upon us, I have a bit of time for R&R, and therefore can play a Linux game or two.

I have bookmarked all the links in this thread so far, so thanks everybody. Some really unproductive time is soon to pass (as well as a few late nights ;) )

Thanks everyone!

Supermaze is available, but subsonic is not available yet. I think it is still in development, although I am not sure when it will be released.

For those of us who are lazy and stick to what is spoon-fed via the package management system, planetpenguinracer is pretty freaking awesome. This is comming from someone who never really made it past Super Nintendo, so I'm not very hard to please when it comes to graphics.

games cost a lot to develop. the linux gaming market is small. it's difficult to turn a profit. that's why.

IYY
January 19th, 2007, 04:27 AM
Once you develop a game for Linux, it's usually (nearly always) very easy to port it to Windows. Often, all that is needed is a recompile!

So, if the project is commercial, they would obviously like to make a Windows version as well to get a lot more profit for no effort.

If it's a non-commercial project, it's probably open source, so anyone can do the port on their own.
