Dear Ubuntu lovers
I have a few important questions:

1. If I'm right, I can do prelinking in Ubuntu
to make programs load faster. Is this possible
in Kubuntu as well? Is it possible in every other
debian-based distro? Does prelinking in this
manner have any side-effects?

2. Will the Ubuntu add-on CD work for Kubuntu
as well? If not, is there a Kubuntu add-on CD
available?

3. I stay in India where high-speed internet connections
are not yet available and we only get dialup which is
awfully slow. And that too not everyone can afford.

Can ANYONE from the Ubuntu Community afford to
PLEASE send me the add-on CD FREE OF CHARGE?
I shall feel highly obliged.

Most people here use a pirated copy of Windows
but I think it is unethical and hence I do not
want to make any contributions to this unethical
practice by using a pirated copy of Windows (which
is installed on my home PC). I do not yet have
a dialup connection but I'm expecting it soon.
Right now I type things at home, copy them to
floppy, and then go to the cybercafe.

So PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ if it is possible for any
individual here to send me the Ubuntu add-on CD
please inform me.

I have given my address details to the shipit website
for the Ubuntu CD as well as the Kubuntu CD but I'm
really not sure if I'll get the CDs or not.

Thanks a lot.

Take care
Coolblue

1. Yes you can do it just like other distros but Ive heard its not a good idea in general. Some people seem to have no probs with it though. Theres a post about it on the ubuntu forums somewhere.

2. The ubuntu one will work but theres no kubuntu version available as of yet. I emailed the creator of it and he said he just didnt have the resourses available at the moment :(

3. Hmm, I would but Im on dialup aswell :( How long have you being waiting for the ordered cds cause they do take a while to come. You should get them eventually though.

Well thats about it ;-)

Hello coolblue, it's nice to see you're still here with us and have decided to give (k)ubuntu a try.

Does the cyber-cafe have a high-speed connection? Is it in your budget to d/l from there? Do they allow cd burning? The add-on cd is about 340 megs which shouldn't be too long for a well connected net-cafe. Perhaps they might even be able to d/l it for you for a small fee? How did you get the Mepis cd?

Another possibility might be finding the nearest linux user group there in India. There may be someone much closer to you than you think who can help or might even already have ubuntu cds.

EDIT: www.linux.org/groups/india this address doesn't seem to work clicking it directly. You might have to navigate from the main site www.linux.org -> User Groups -> India

Send me your home address and I'll send you some cds. Although you should receive the Ubuntu cds soon, The add-on cd is not included.

1. I do not think that prelinking speeds up things all that much in Debian/ubuntu.
2. I think it shoudl work.
3. See above.
