e-Commerce question (PHP based)

Hey all

Assume for a minute that I have a working e-Commerce site, written in PHP, that processes payment via paypal. I am curious as to how one would process credit/debit cards. How exactly does it work and how do you do it?

The site I currently have is based on a tutorial and works brilliantly. It does not have support for credit/debit cards which is essential.

Any input would be great.
