how much does your customised DE differ from it's default settings?

I'm using Gnome with another WM and the panels are changed.

My desktop is actually not that much different from the default gnome desktop. Yes - Ive themed it to my liking etc, but the layout is still the same. As the WM I use Beryl - it's just that cool ;) And I even find it to increase usability and effectiveness, mostly because of the cube and scale plugins.

A screenshot of my current desktop is attached:

I like your desktop xopher. Could you explain a bit? I don't understand how you just have the "system" icon at the top and I don't understand if that is a drop down menu or a desklet, or what. What gtk theme are you using? Icons?

at the moment, i'm using kde with beryl. instead of konqueror, i'm using dolphin for a file manager and opera for a browser. i'm also using thunderbird instead of kmail. (the nice thing about not using konqueror and kmail is not having to use kdewallet. kdewallet has to be the most annoying thing about kde.)

I'm using Openbox with pypanel. It's a very different desktop.

Nothing special going on here. Just a nice icon theme plus some custom icons that I found here and there. Oh and a vista like emerald theme.

I have merged Gnome's two panels into one, and then added one panel to side of the screen for all launchers. (I have a widescreen so this makes more sense than having it at the bottom of the screen).

I have tried using USP and the single-button menu but I feel the Applications/Places/System-arrangement is far more usable than any other solution so after couple of days I always return to it.

Im using the USP (Ubuntu System Panel; IIRC), more info here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=222546

And the murrine engine with the MurrinaFancyCandy theme for GTK.

The icons I use are called 'OSX' and are available here:

Just don't give it a master password if it's that annoying, it'll open silently then!

The first thing I do to every KDE I setup, is the menu bar, I don't like Macs.. but I have to have my menu bar at the top ;)

You know you can bring your menu closer to the panel, right?

open gconf-editor

apps>usp

Then find 'panel size' and set it to a lower number. :)

Definitely. That's why I really hate using Kopete, despite it's other features. I use Firefox and Thunderbird instead of Konqueror/KMail so that worked out fine.

My DE is almost the same as the default KDE, except I have added a lot of custom stuff to the panel at the bottom, such as a "Run Applications as Root" menu, which includes KSysGuard, Konquorer/Firefox as root, Start/Stop XAMPP, etc. that will start through kdesu.

I only have a single panel and I use different GTK, Icon and Metacity themes. Other than that, it's pretty standard Gnome. When I use IceWM, I use the IceBuntu theme but nothing special (except for a little modification I made to the code that allows some auto-completion in the toolbar).

Mine is pretty standard, i just made it blue and did some minor tweaks.
I like the standard Gnome layout, it's very easy to navigate.

What's your window style? Can you post your colour theme please?

I don't change my desktop very much from the standard Ubuntu GNOME default desktop.

I add a couple of shortcuts to apps I frequently use, add a wallpaper and make that transparent and then (in Edgy) make sure I have 4 desktops. And that's about it.

Mine is pretty standard. Better wallpaper and a few changes to the panels, I like everything clean on open looking, need to clean the desktop actually.

I personally make a lot of changes to things. It usually takes me a week to get myself back to being completely comfortable. Themes get changed out quickly, I add an invisible panel or two, change the fonts, change a variety of the behaviors, change out programs for others ... the first couple days are a _LOT_ of work for me.

Not as far out as some that I have seen, but I'm on my way.

I got into Beryl/Emerald on the weekend. Screen shots just don't do it justice!

At the moment I have been playing around with some glass themes. I'm using Trueglass (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=48462) at the moment. Still looking for some "nice" icons to go with it.

You should search for the recordmydesktop thread in the how-to section and give us a little demonstration via YouTube =)

I use Fvwm, so it's customized pretty much by definition.
