Does anyone have any figures to the size of the local South African community? I would be very interested to know how many people are using Ubuntu and how many are actively involved in either Ubuntu dev or community support like the forums.

Any ideas?

i would recommend showing up to tonight's irc meeting to ask such questions. although, there is no way of tracing how many people use ubuntu, you might be able to get a good estimate of how many people are part of the locoteam.

more people than we think are actually using it. its a pity our country's internet pricing is so backwards cause we would have better figures if we knew who how many people were updating their system.

I'm not a developer... but I try where I can to help people on the forums, and sometimes on IRC

I am planning however to do a course in Linux Administration, Networking and Security.... as I Adore the OS. Then I plan on starting a business to help other businesses to make the SWITCH to a more cost effective system. Especially those that may need to upgrade to VISTA.

Oh, hello !

A nice indication would be a merge of

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-za
http://za.ubuntuforums.org
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-za (+-280 people)
#ubuntu-za on irc.freenode.net

In practice this is not possible. There was a thread started on the mailing list to try and get as accurate figures as possible for every one to try and join the launchpad group (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-za) this is currently sitting on 69 active members. But the mailing list seems to have the most active portion of the community.

Hi everybody, well, the day finally happend, I'm throwing Windows out the window. After working 6months in a Unix enviroment, and going back to Windows enviroment, I've had it.
Currently, I'm backing up my data (mostly music as I've only been working at the new location since Monday) and then I'm installing Ubuntu, SO, expect a few questions from me over the weekend if I struggle!

Cheers!

Oh wow...

I just double checked by booting up with the Ubuntu CD, and I am impressed!
I could access my USB HDD (on which I backed up my files) and I could use a Terminal Server Client and connect to our Win2003 server. Beeeaaautifull!

So, long night ahead, but the way its going, might not be!

what "pushed" me over the edge, well, I had to re-format my laptop twice this week, new laptop! First, they installed HP recovery disk (which I dont like) and THEN Office Pro 2007 just would not install.

Anyhow, once I'm settled, I'll get active in the whole Ubuntu-way.

ps, laptop is a HP 6730b model, so far, no problems.
pss, arent I over-optimistic?!

A statistic I didn't see mentioned here is that we have 280-something people on the ubuntu-za mailing list.

Then, as far as people using Ubuntu that we aren't tracking, most people in the Cape Linux User Group (http://wiki.clug.org.za) run Ubuntu, and a good number aren't involved in our list or community. There are many organisations using Ubuntu, like universities, schools and the CSIR etc who perhaps only have one or two representatives in our community.

So the real number of Ubuntu users in South Africa is much higher than we can track...

Hi Guys

I am kinda new to Linux and ubuntu i started playing on and off when i think it was 4.10 was released. I would like to get more involved as i did before but work kind of kept me away a bit. I am in the joburg area and like i said i would like to get more involved. I am not a developer. to be honust i am a systems administrator for a trading platform at the JSE, which runs on UNIX. What will be my first step in getting envolved where do i sign and where do the joburg guys meet. :D

Thanks in advance.

In general the ZA community in my exprience tends to lean to more active on the mailing list front. (As you can see from this sub forum). But I am always pretty active on the forums so glad to have you.
