It's still very, very early days, but Dolphin (http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=40491) is winning over a lot of fans.

gnome-commander is another type of file manager, very popular among those who used norton commander on Windows. midnight-commander (mc) is another such manager, but it's command-line based.

Go mc! I either use mc or the command prompt, but if I want to install a font, I use Nautilus because I'm too lazy, and its "fonts://" thing makes it easy ;)

Check this page out http://applications.linux.com/article.pl?sid=05/02/23/2226202&tid=13
they have listed quite a few, Right now I'm sort of looking around for an alternative to nautilus, not that nautilus doesn't work just fine it's just that it's boring and compared to konqueror it is not as feature rich.

That PCman thing looks cool, bit I can't find any PCmanFM++ with google search.

I sometimes use endeavour2 becuse it has a search functioms that actually works.
But if I search root, it also searches all other drives, because of the mountpoint system.

Anyone know an other FM that has good search function?

There are Ubuntu deb packages available at http://lottalinuxlinks.com/pcmanfm/

I was able to install pcmanfm on Dapper with these.

Hey, that PCManFM is really nice. I might include that one as part of my regular setup.

Just a note: I added most (I think all) of the file managers mentioned here to the wiki page for Installation/LowMemorySystems (installation on low-memory or legacy systems), where they'll probably be useful for people building custom or low-spec rigs. Thanks.

Nice job, Mandla ;)

Just a suggestion: for ease of iDesk's icons management, I installed idesktools, which is a great little app you can find here --> http://www.jmurray.id.au/ideskconf.html

I don't really recommend idesk-extras, the "extras" bit is not that useful (and the icons are quite ugly) :P

Also, do remember to install Xdialog ;)

Just a little more OT:

I really love the combination of Fluxbox + idesk (and idesktools), PCManFM and torsmo.

http://img393.imageshack.us/my.php?image=skintopfl5.jpg

Even though I also have this setup at my laptop (which can handle GNOME and Beryl quite well), I also use this at my old Compaq iPaq with a Pentium III 733MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM, and it runs flawlessly.

Wow, that is sharp. Why torsmo over conky?

Are you able to add those idesk tips to the wiki? If idesktools is easier than editing the text files by hand (what am I saying??! ), it would be a big help.
