Windows vs. Ubuntu

Which operating system do you think is better, Windows, or Ubuntu?

I'm going to compare one point of Windows XP and Ubuntu Version 6.1, to start. Please, add on your own comparison.


Can it boot from the CD?

Ubuntu - Yes, you can boot it from the CD. Although you can't save stuff, and it is very slow, you can do most of the things you can do after an installation, including browsing the web. Also, you can install it anytime from the CD.:KS

Windows - You need to install it in order to run it.:(

Well, I will add that the Ubuntu is
1. Free
2. Open to all prying eyes (though I don't know how to do it
3. Has TONS of cool stuff a click away
4. Has better support
5. Is different

Which is better Ubuntu or Windows..... on the Ubuntu forums? :rolleyes:

Maybe we could ask some Microsoft employees to answer a similar question, or maybe ask whether OSX or Windows is better over at the Apple forums? :rolleyes:

Actually it is tricky. It highly depends on your definition of better. By itself an OS is fairly useless, it's about the applications you can run on it.

Here is my breakdown.
Desktops/Laptops (with ATI/Intel video)/HTPCs
I would say they are more or less tied at this point.

Ubuntu (and most Linux in my experience) is a one time setup and run forever deal. Unless you change the hardware the system won't have to be touched safe for an occasional third party software update (such as flash).

Windows is normally setup for you by the OEM and as such requires little to no set up at first. However it needs to be maintained over it's life span. Though most things can be automated.

While I believe Ubuntu/Linux is a better OS, for most things the ease of driver installation makes Windows just as good.

Tablets/Laptops (nVidia GPU)
Windows wins here because Ubuntu has pretty bad tablet support as it doesn't include the software (or at least I didn't find it) to control certain tablet functions, such as calibration and auto rotating the screen (convertible tablets) when put in tablet mode. Tablets also tend to have specialized function buttons that even the kernel won't recognize as present.

When it comes to nVidia based laptops, Windows wins once again because the nVidia driver for Linux doesn't allow for GPU throttling, which can make as much as 30 mins difference in battery life (at least in my experience).

So all in all, it depends on what you need.
