View Full Version : Do You Have a Pet ?

Hello everybody,

[ This is my first poll so please bare with me :) ]

Since I love animals very much and cats most of all, who are proverbial for the "Curiosity kills the cat" thing, I must admit it, I'm a very curious person too and I'd like to know how many of us owe a pet, which pet(s) and - if you don't have one, please tell us why.

Just satisfying my curiosity... alright, I know, there were two threads somehow related but not in this form, one was a "Cats vs Dogs" thread and the other one was a poll on weather you keep or not the pet in your house, but the goal I have in mind is to provide a more complete and interactive thread... ? Not sure if I can, but still, I'd like to see what some of you have to say.

OK, so let me begin : I have a 6 months cat, his name is Ronnie (...guess who inspired me ?) and, of course, I love him a lot. :D

Here are some pics, kind of old, but since I don't have a digital camera I don't have the chance to take photos of him too often, so I guess they'll do for now:

I have a cat, his name is Popcorn. We've had him for about 5 months. Its pretty sad how we got him.

I live in the country, about 20 minutes from the nearest township. I was driving down one of the roads on my way to the gas station when I see this little orange bundle on the side of the road. Its about 8:00, so its starting to get dark. Anyway, I stop and find it's a crying tiny, tiny cat. About as big as my hand. So I take him home, get him warm and give him some water and decide to keep him.

But whats really sad about this story is that he isn't a stray. When I took him too the vet, I found out he was in too good condition to be a stray, and he was only 4 weeks old. So either he was lost (Highly unlikely, he was too far away from anything), or someone just abandoned him. Pretty sad.

Anyway, he has a good home now. Heres a picture. A bit blurry, but my photo-taking skills suck. ;)

A couple dogs in the family, and I once owned an Albino Hedgehog.. I got it when it was a couple years old though, and it never really warmed up to me. We had a special ritual with occasional bologna feedings, but thats as far as it went.

I voted dog, as I sometimes take care of the folks dog when they are away, no pets of my own though right now. I love dogs, and like cats, all the other pets mentioned are nice too, reptiles make really interesting pets, and ice-breakers.

Hahaha, this is really funny ! No need to worry, the cat I had before this one was a little mean black beast, and since she was so special... I was so dumb that I called her plainly "Pisica" - that's Romanian for "cat" (in fact, for "the cat", articulated). The funny thing is that she actually knew her name and she answered whenever I called her.

Yes, I wonder how cats know their names and not only names but much much more. They can even be jealous. I remember I tried to caress a small kitten in presence of my cat. I was amazed by his reaction; he rushed to the kitten, frightened her and then took her place asking for his (yes, his!) share of love and affection! :)

P.S. Site administrators, think it's time to rename this topic into 'Do you have a Cat?' cause there are so many cat lovers... ;)

EDIT: LLRNR, Your cat is amazing!

Well i`ve only got 3 quarters of a pet left so does that count??

I used to have 2 wee black & white staffs.Jai & Sophie were mother and son but we lost Sophie to old age 2 years ago and wee Jai lost his leg to cancer 6 months later..

I had had my dogs longer than i`ve had my family and i`ve had them 14 years:D
Jai`s an old man too now too though and he`s litterally on his last legs..:( ...no pun intended.

It was his front right leg he lost so at first when he used to **** his back left leg after the amputation he would end up balanced on 2 legs and a chin.
He refuses to squat to this day though and he`s become ever so clever at balancing on two legs when he pees:eek:

Devastating when they go though:(

Sorry to hear that...That was how our Jai lost his leg a couple of years ago, although losing his leg was better than losing his life.
His mother had just died months previously so it was a bit of a double blow to this house.:(
Even at 14 with only 3 legs though he`s still a dirty randy old man and nothing`s off limits with him,he`s particualary fond of peoples legs nowadays but im never quite sure why:-? ..

I'm a cat lover, but I don't have any yet... For many years I was highly allergic to them! :( Fortunately that seems to be getting better - at least, I can stand being around other peoples' cats for an extended period. Used to get irritated after just a few minutes!

I do have a neighborhood cat that likes to show up in the back yard now and then. He's one heckuva friendly guy, when I'm working from home sitting out back he'll hop right up in my lap - who cares about that computer that's already there?!? :-D

I'd love to have a dog or three, but (1) we rent and our landlord wouldn't appreciate it, and (2) we both work during the day and would hate to lock the dog in the house until we get home. It wouldn't be fair. I grew up surrounded by dogs; my mum was a dog breeder (Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, New Foundland dogs and Alaskan Malamutes).

She faced jailtime if she didn't give away some of her dogs. Belle is an 85 lb, 1.5 year old Great Pyrenees - Shepherd mix that we adopted when she was about 4 months. Both are certifiably insane.

I love animals, especially dogs and cats. I've written some stories about my dogs that are posted on my Web site. These stories suggest that when you lose an animal that you love, adopt another one quickly, to help ease the pain of loss.

I'm 74 and my wife is 70. We are retired and our pets are a 24 hours per day joy for us. They are like our children.

LLRNR, thank you for starting this thread and if you don't mind, please check out my Web site which has links to my dog stories. I don't expect you to take the time to read all my stuff, ha. OK, so what I want to know is this, pet owners:

By what mechanism are pets consistently able to push larger animals out of bed, and why?

I don't have dogs, but I recently saw some night-vision pictures of a series of sleeping people with their dogs in bed with them, and though it was not the focus of the article, I couldn't help but notice that the dogs had almost completely pushed the humans out the beds in every single case. Not a single exception!

My little cat almost does it with me.

How do they do it? This is one of life's great mysteries.

OK, so what I want to know is this, pet owners:

By what mechanism are pets consistently able to push larger animals out of bed, and why?

My little cat almost does it with me.

How do they do it?

I've seen that too... Except that I tend to go against the wall (my bed is next to the wall), I have an un-squashing, protective instinc I guess, and when I wake up, I find my lazy cat spreading all over the bed, while I only have the "right" to occupy 1/3 of my own bed !!!

@ BWF89 : Cool ! Is your Ruckus a rocker too ? \m/ :D

Certainly mysterious, though I've found something of a cure -- putting an extra fold of electric blanket or something to create an extra-warm spot near the edge of the bed. Cats, being nature's own heat-seeking missiles, will stick to that hotspot like glue, so you may enjoy the rest of the bed unencumbered.

I'm using this technique right now. ;)

I have four ferrets: Cocoa (male), Pepper (male), Snowball (male), and Sula (female). Originally, I had three Cubby (male) along with Pepper and Sula, but Cubby died in my arms one night from a serious gastrointestinal problem. I miss him a lot...

Here are my girls. Bourbon (first picture) is a 135 lb. 5 year old female Great Pyrenees that we rescued from a woman who had about 50-60 dogs on a small rural property. She faced jailtime if she didn't give away some of her dogs. Belle is an 85 lb, 1.5 year old Great Pyrenees - Shepherd mix that we adopted when she was about 4 months. Both are certifiably insane.

We have 2 guinea pigs, 2 hamsters, 9 gerbils, a few tropical fish, one kitten (impending - friend's cat is pregnant, and apparently we are going to have one of it's offspring), 2 children and one soft fluffy tux!

Had lots of cats in the past, up to four at one time. Our last cat, Dizzy died earlier this year, she was 19 :(

Would also like a rabbit (a black and white one and call it Tux) but my wife won't let me! The kitten, if black and white, will be called Tux instead, if my wife and kids will let me.

We like animals!

Checked... Wow, I really love your hardware testing workbench

Thanks LLRNR. I guess you could see that we love our pets. The workbench you saw is easy to make if you have a few old computer parts.

Thanks for putting Romania on my map. The map coverage is really growing now. I suspect that many of our pet lovers have been to my site too. Thanks from: Chloe (Scottie), Daisy (Dorkie {yes that's a D}), Mac (Scottish Fold cat) and Peg (my biggest pet - my wife).

Aye, they're the most well-behaved and laid-back dogs I've ever owned. The older of the two is very dominant and animal aggressive, it took her some time to get used to Belle, but I think that came from food competition when she was with her original owner. She seems to have gotten much better over this past year.

When we got her she was a dingy brown color with huge stick-and-leaf-embedded mats. It took about 5 washes (over the course of some months. overwashing is a big nono) to get her fully white again.

Following on from the thread about training the rabbit, what pets does everyone have?

I have a rescued Greyhound who is 12, a German Shepherd who is 18 months. 4 cats, a rabbit.
I also babysit the Rottweiller puppy who lives next door while Lyn its owner is at work.

No I do not have children I just love animals and work from home so have the time to devote to them. I have always had animals since I was child. I am 40 now so too old to change!

Ps No my rabbit is not trained!

Also at dad's is my albino black rat snake (freckles), whos like... 16 now? something like that. And... I guess thats it anymore. I have two Heelers, a red one and a blue one. They'er sisters and just over a year old now. The red heeler is called Skeeter and the blue heeler is Rena. I also have a chinchilla called Nobel, but I usually just refer to him as little dude or "the rat". All of them are spoilt rotten.
