LOL very nice read.. There are some great gems in there.. like "A generation of computer users might get use to accepting foreign software hand-outs rather than paying for a superior American products."

"And guess what software Osama Bin Laden uses on his laptop?
If you guessed it was Linux you would be 100% right. Osama uses Linux because he knows designed to counterfit DVDs, curcumventing the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and defraud companies like Disney."

I love seeing the comments from people that think it is real too.

Thanks for the laugh!

"There is an entire generation of people growing up believing that x86 is how computers work. This view is retarded by most common standards."

Thanks for linking to it.

"...Osama uses Linux because he knows designed to counterfit DVDs, curcumventing the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and defraud companies like Disney...."

And it's not all bad, we're in his prayers:

"...Finally, remember to include Linux users in your prayers tonight...."

I feel blessed already. :)

Hilarious. No with with half a brain could believe "Osama uses Linux because he knows designed to counterfit DVDs, curcumventing the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and defraud companies like Disney." Obviously not meant seriously.

The whole blog is meant as a joke/satire. Great stuff.

To denote that you're a Republican ( "Shelley the Republican") and follow it up with a bunch of completely unfounded articles with a Christian and Anti-European bias, sure seems more like a parody than a real blog :) at least to me it does.

The site runs on Apache off a server in Dallas so I guess she's giving aid to Usama Bin Laden, right? I'm pretty sure it's sarcasm. Most people in Iowa, including myself, don't behave like this plus she lives in Iowa City, a typical college town.

Now If she lived in Texas or some other bible banging state I might not be so sure of myself.

Edit: By "pretty sure" I mean about 99.9% sure.

Like it or not, Shelley, the site hosting your blog uses a real operating system: Unix. Unix, by the way, was developed by AT&T, another real American corporation.

Imagine if the State of the Union address were hacked because the TV station decided to save money by using Linux? Imagine if a stealth-bomber crashed because it's software was written by anonymous Chinese or European hackers. It would make as much sense as inviting the French to come over and take over the White-House.

Paranoid?

If you guessed it was Linux you would be 100% right. Osama uses Linux because he knows designed to counterfit DVDs, curcumventing the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and defraud companies like Disney.

LOL, get a grip, how much of that came from her imagination?
Anyway... she REALY needs to get her priorities right...

If you see a company using Linux, it may be that they have not paid for this software. Report them to the Business Software Alliance who have the legal authority to inspect any company's computers for illegal programs like Linux.

Linux is a primative European clone... For example Linux has no built-in anti-virus or anti-spyware software.
You cannot even buy popular utilities like Norton Security to compensate for this fact. There are no tools for common tasks like defragging a hard disk. God knows what you would use to send a fax or make a website. You cannot even get Front Page for Linux.

Eric Hermechales said... Using russian hacker tools is not really a proof, more ever if this is a Linux tool made by anarchists.

And even if there is no bias, it would still not be a proof, since it could be a trap, isn't deceipt the main technic of hacking , as the book of the great hacker Kevin Mitnick is called "the art of deception" ?

You will also note that Mitnick, being a real hacker, never worked to improve such anti american system as Linux, and he helped usa to be more protected against foreign threat such as chinese and russian hackers by testing the various security system.

The main problem were du to people not enough wary, such useless people should be fired for their incompetence at least in the governement.

My mouth was left so open that I can bite like a Crocodile now.

Isn't this ShelleyTheRepublican too good to be true? She is so Republican that she ranges from supporting G.W. to the NRA and a firm believer in Christ and all. Ok, that is standard. And then she thinks Europeans are all communists and liberals. Ok, that is standard as well. But take a look at "Good Links" and bellow that, "Enemies". Was this person left with a mental age of 7? "Enemies"???

This has to be a joke. What a sad life.

You may not have heard of this web-site, however it is the most popular co-ordination center for illegal left-wing vigilantism. Despite being owned by an American company, it's users overwhelmingly consist of European hackers who have a grudge against American business and morals. ShelleyTheRepublican in post

8. Is your son obsessed with "Lunix"?

BSD, Lunix, Debian and Mandrake are all versions of an illegal hacker operation system, invented by a Soviet computer hacker named Linyos Torovoltos, before the Russians lost the Cold War. It is based on a program called "xenix", which was written by Microsoft for the US government. These programs are used by hackers to break into other people's computer systems to steal credit card numbers. They may also be used to break into people's stereos to steal their music, using the "mp3" program. Torovoltos is a notorious hacker, responsible for writing many hacker programs, such as "telnet", which is used by hackers to connect to machines on the internet without using a telephone.

Your son may try to install "lunix" on your hard drive. If he is careful, you may not notice its presence, however, lunix is a capricious beast, and if handled incorrectly, your son may damage your computer, and even break it completely by deleting Windows, at which point you will have to have your computer repaired by a professional.

If you see the word "LILO" during your windows startup (just after you turn the machine on), your son has installed lunix. In order to get rid of it, you will have to send your computer back to the manufacturer, and have them fit a new hard drive. Lunix is extremely dangerous software, and cannot be removed without destroying part of your hard disk surface.

aysiu
April 29th, 2006, 04:29 PM
She's a satirist. She very well may be, but I see no evidence that she is in that thread... or the original Linux blog entry in question.

Good satire is obviously tongue-in-cheek and so over-the-top that it could not be taken seriously. I have met people in America who are just like Shelley (not many, mind you--but they do exist), so her Linux entry is not necesarily satire. She's the real thing, or if she isn't... she's bad satire. Sorry. It's not good satire.

Jonathan Swift is good satire (http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html) because his proposal for eating children is so over-the-top that it cannot be taken seriously, and the proposal itself is titled "A Modest Proposal," accentuating the irony--as, even if you believe in cannibalism, you cannot possibly believe such a proposal to be modest.

Good satirists do not necessarily take the time to explain their satire to others, but they tend to ridicule others who take their work seriously instead of getting further into character and goading on people who take their satire seriously ad nauseum, as Shelley did.

I'm not saying Shelley is not trying to be a satirist. I'm saying it's not clear she is one, as, if she is intending to be one, she is a very poor one. At best, she's a sincere (and extremely misguided) soul who believes strongly in what she believes. At worst, she's just an internet troll.

Let's not dignify her with the title "satirist."

Oh dread, I must disagree.

The addendum Swift wrote - the one you'll generally see in most English anthologies - was to explain that he was kidding. He would've lost his patronage otherwise. Many people took him seriously, so seriously he had to write a second pamphlet, the one with the explantion of sustained irony. We should mention that he offered us intricate recipes, economic consequences and benefits, tanning solutions and so on, indeed taking his ironic self seriously. According to the publication histories I've read, people, a lot of people, including his patrons and friends, indulged the possibility he was not joking.

I'm not so pomo that I take everything as ironic, but this one, I gotta go with satire. And funny. I mean, "Lunix"? That's impish. Love it.

therunnyman

aysiu
April 29th, 2006, 07:24 PM
That's my point, exactly, though.

When Swift saw people were taking him seriously, he had to tell people he was joking.

This Shelley person has done nothing of the sort, but has egged people on to believing her.

Also, Swift, from a literary perspective (even if people were too dumb to pick up on it) put in all the necessary elements to announce his piece as satire--if people were too dumb to pick up on it, that's their fault.

Shelley, however, has no literary merit in her piece or any thoughtful indication that she's exaggerating. I've seen successfully written satires of the stereotypical dumb, American conservative, and hers was not one of them.

There is nothing apologetic or intentionally humorous about this site (http://www.shelleytherepublican.com/). All the "Good links" are legitimate links, and the articles are not over-the-top enough in literary construction to indicate an easily understood satire.

Compare that to the website for The Onion: America's Finest News Source, which begins one of its FAQ pages (http://www.theonion.com/content/faq/editorial):
The Onion is a satirical weekly publication published 52 times a year on Thursdays. The Onion is published by Onion, Inc. Notice how Swift immediately tells people, "Hey, you didn't get it," and The Onion has a page explaining that it's a Satire.

Notice also how the title of Swift's piece, "A Modest Proposal" is in flat-out contradiction to the contents (modest... let's eat half our children?), as is the tagline of The Onion... "America's Finest News Source." When you see the headlines, you realize right away, it's not.

Here's a little snippet on the front page about "Mexican Immigrants Call For A Day of Action":
I see what they are trying to do. A day off on May 1st, then the Cinco de Mayo—before you know it, we're looking at a 5 day weekend.

Compare this to a legitimate news outlet, which has a quotation like this:
If they do walk, it will impact the economy, to what degree I don't know. It could be done in a better way. I don't even know who's organizing it. Most Hispanics I know are going to work Monday.

Find me one Irishman who believes we should eat half our children, and I'll find you a million Americans who agree completely with Shelley's latest blog entry:
Friends
Liberals do damage America every day.
They undermine American values, they collaborate with the enemy, they lie, they pollute good American's minds with their filthy talk...
But the far worst liberals do is to corrupt the most precious we have: Our Children. Liberals are not fit to raise children.
I am currently working an another article outlining my thoughts, theories and hope for a better future.
Stick around.... I don't see anything satirical about this at all.

Shelley's website has the tagline:
FOR GOD, FREEDOM AND GEORGE W. BUSH - ONE NATION UNDER GOD : : U - S - A : (Love it or Leave it!) Are you trying to tell me that that's an exaggeration of many American Republicans' attitudes? I assure you it is not.

Just so we're on the same page (har har har), which version of the pamphlet are we talking about? The one where there is no explanation or apology, or the one with the explanation, apology, and call for some action or other besides skinning and eating urchins?

I ask because:

Notice how Swift immediately tells people, "Hey, you didn't get it,".

Swift added his "just kidding" and impassioned plea at the point of a gun, or shillelagh, rather: his patrons were going to withdraw their support. He didn't want to, he had to, starvation being the consequence.

Shelley, however, has no literary merit in her piece or any thoughtful indication that she's exaggerating. I've seen successfully written satires of the stereotypical dumb, American conservative, and hers was not one of them.

Here I wholly concur. I didn't mean to imply shelley's piece was on a par with Swift's. Matter of fact, give humanity another handful of eons, and I doubt anything will ever be on a par with Swift's piece.

The one where there is no explanation or apology, or the one with the explanation, apology, and call for some action or other besides skinning and eating urchins? I was actually talking about the one without the explanation.

Here I wholly concur. I didn't mean to imply shelley's piece was on a par with Swift's. Matter of fact, give humanity another handful of eons, and I doubt anything will ever be on a par with Swift's piece. Well, there are two ways to look at a satirical (or any literary) piece in terms of its "success": construction and effect.

#1. You can put in all the appropriate literary devices to indicate to your reader that the piece is satirical and still have too dumb an audience to realize it.

#2. Likewise, you can be too dumb yourself to know how to write a satirical piece and then just call your audience dumb if they don't "get it."

Either way, you have an audience that doesn't get it. I believe Swift's piece falls into category #1 and Shelley's into category #2 (if it is actually intended to be a satire).

I'm too lazy to analyze the body of each text phrase by phrase, but I don't think I need to. These three facts alone separate Swift from Shelley:

1. Swift was not spouting an existing party line. He was making up something, something totally outrageous. The attitudes and approach make fun of certain groups of people, but the proposal itself is outrageous enough to warrant a "satire" label.

Shelley is not making up anything. People actually have those attitudes and express them as such. Those attitudes and expressions are quite common in certain parts of America.

2. The title of Swift's piece is in contrast to the content of his piece. Shelley's title goes hand in hand with her content.

3. Swift wanted to be sure people didn't think he was serious. Shelley continues the "masquerade" (if it really is one) even after much serious objection.

I don't disagree.

That's true. We gotta say, though, that this isn't a hard and fast rule of satire, the genre.

3. Swift wanted to be sure people didn't think he was serious. Shelley continues the "masquerade" (if it really is one) even after much serious objection.

This isn't necessarily true. We don't, and we can't, know what Swift wanted. I'm sure you're familiar with the Intentional Fallacy, as an English Teacher. Second, there's evidence to the contrary: Swift was forced to say "just kidding, you dirty rats," by his patrons, on pain of poverty. Again, this is from what I've read of the history of the pamphlet's publication, and I welcome edification, as always.

Yes! With gusto! In a ragout!

Just kidding.

I meant that we simply can't know what Swift wanted - it's an error in logic is all - and that by the accounts I'm familiar with, Swift initially published his pamphlet without a "just kidding." To my recollection, during his lifetime, there were "editions" of A Modest Proposal with ironic text in italics, and serious text in plain type. Or vice versa. I'll look it up if you want.

Please don't take my persistence as a peeing contest, or as at all hostile. I'm just relatin' what I read in the papers.

PS to whoever brought up the point about Shelley living in Little Rock: Y'all don't worry. We don't refer to it as "Lunix" in these here parts. :p

To say "I believe this as far as I can throw it" would be painfully obvious.

Other Internet parodies of this nature include "Warning Signs Your Child May Be A Goth."

To say "I'm going to post a comment/e-mail her/beat down her door/etc." would be stupid because I doubt she cares, and if indeed it is a parody I'd look much more the fool.

If you scroll down that page there is this little footnote - just to keep you guessing:

Shelley says:
"Actually, all of the above is a lie. Tristan wrote it, he is such a nerd! I am real and I mean it and I don't want you to comment and I will never stop, because I have God on my side and George W. Bush and they told me to fight the evil democ-rats!!!

Also I believe this isn't realistic and just some kind of form of satire.

But if we look in the real life Linux has enemies it never asked for. Unlike Microsoft and Apple, Linux isn't being developed to become the next 'paid for' OS. It's being developed from totally different visions and desires.

Imagine the developement of a stable, reliable, transparant & opensource OS. This with computer becoming much cheaper by the year. It means that every man, woman and child could be connected to the internet and share within the upcoming 20 to 50 years (including 3rd world countries).
At the same time this means a downfall of commercial (demon :)) entities who's goal is not to make a better world, but money.

I can imagine the lobbying and pursation of important politicians to ban Linux from the modern digital era. The influence of people who want and have money is still great, but with life-changing projects such as Linux this is bound to change sooner or later.

Unable to appreciate the beauty of God’s world, atheists try to drown out creation with music they listen to on their Godless MP3 players. They listen to whiny music from groups like ‘System Of A Down’

As an atheist, I resent this. System of a Down is a worthless band that wouldn't know heavy metal if it fell from the sky and crushed them. Hip atheists listen to Bruce Dickinson.

Passages like this, for example, seem to signify it's a joke:

It’s a computer program that was initially developed in Finland as a means of circumventing valuable copyrights and patents owned by an American company called SCO Group.

It's either a joke or an unbelievably perfect adversary. :)

edit: And from the comments, by the author of the article:

For example Linux has no built-in anti-virus or anti-spyware software.

You cannot even buy popular utilities like Norton Security to compensate for this fact. There are no tools for common tasks like defragging a hard disk.

Ahh it's the simple fact: "Confused People want to confuse others also" it makes them feel they are not alone.
But talking about confusion does it make you unconfused knowledgeable enlightened on that matter?? Did't think so..
And since the discussion is on "unemployed nerds" how come you have the time
to scan forums of distro's you don't care about since you're so busy and all??
But given the fact that people think in a differential way,
i guess i have to say (in your words) Thank God people like you exist!! :lolflag:
