Can someone tell me why Herbert Schildt's programming books are so generally disregarded by the programming community as a whole ?. I wish I had known this information before buying a couple of his books.

Thanks,

I'm learning Java right now as a course in college, and I'd like your opinion on Schildt's Java 2 Complete Reference. I realise that it's not exactly a beginner's book, although the author states that no prior programming experience in Java is required to read it, but I usually prefer to have a handy reference in the form of a book. Just to add, I am familiar with C++. I never knew Schildt's books have such a bad reputation until I came across this thread, yesterday, and then searched the internet. Are the amazon.com reviews misleading?

Are the amazon.com reviews misleading?

Two things to watch out for:

0. Make sure the review is reviewing the book, not their expectations. Too many seem to think a pocket reference should be an in depth review of the standard, or that a reference book should be a step by step tutorial.
1. Make sure the review isn't born out of the reviewer's stupidity.
