I started to customize my desktop after seeing some amazing ones during the November desktop thread. I haven't decided on the colors to use for conky yet, so I don't have that running, but all in all I am pretty happy with my theme. I just keep changing between a few similar wallpapers.

I play games, so Beryl is out of the picture for now...

Beryl does that, and I also use Beryl's 'state'-plugin to remove borders from Gnome-terminal when I launch it with the profile I made for the desktop-ncmpc.

I just got beryl working again and I see that I do have a drop shadow but it's very minimal. Yours looked more prominent. Is there an option to change it? Nothing jumped out at me.

Thanks.

The shadows depend on Emerald themes, so the place to tune them is Emerald Theme Manager. Select a theme you like, and then you'll find shadows in Themes Settings - Edit Themes - Frame/Shadows.

Ah, now I get it. I was playing with that last night but I couldn't see any difference. I changed the shadow color and did an extreme offset and then I could see what it was doing. I guess it also does the windows as well as the panels.

Many thanks.

Sorry man, but the incredible size of those files coupled with the slow speed of your server will probably stop anyone from looking at your screenshots.
You really ought to save your screenshots as jpg rather than png. The quality loss is only small, and the files would be a much more reasonable size.

Here's mine. I still can't give up my fall colors despite the snow on the ground. Anyone know why my skydome is curved (I used 2048x2048) or why I lost my beryl icon? I tried to get a snapshot of the burning windows but couldn't seem to get it to work. Maybe slow reflexes.

d3v1ant_0n3
December 3rd, 2006, 07:36 PM
Try turning off 'animate skydome' option? Not quite sure what you mean, sorry.

You can slow animations right down-my keybinding for it is SHIFT+F10, but I can't remember if that's default.

m.musashi
December 3rd, 2006, 07:41 PM
If you look closely at the top and bottom of the skydome image you can see that it seems to have curvature. The original image does not. Animate skydome is not turned on. I tried a couple of sizes using the power of 2 rule and all had this effect. It almost looks like a piece of paper that doesn't quite fit and is bulging out.

@ice60 you mind posting your .conkyrc file?

i've put all the scripts in an archive, i keep them in ~/scripts, then tell conky where to look for them at the bottom of conkyrc, so you'll have to change the paths there.

it won't let me upload conkyrc lol, i'll try again in the next post :|

i think the scripts and conky have been uploaded now :-k

here's where i configured the weather and RSS feeds -
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=24669&pid=144272&st=0&#entry144272
it has this link on the page too which shows how to get the weather code! (put where you live in the url below vv)
http://xoap.weather.com/search/search?where=
then put the code in this bit in conkyrc replace this bit UKXX0085 and put the path to your scipts there too.

${execi 1800 /home/iceni/scripts/weather.sh UKXX0085}

something might have to be changed in conkyrc though because yesterday one of the feeds had lots of writting in and conky went off the screen :o over to my neighbours i think :|

It's a theme addon called TGTSoft StyleXP (very original name!). From memory you have to mess about with a cracked theme lib that is part of XP to get it to work though. It's been so long since I used that old dinosaur that I've forgotten , sorry.

And YES that actually is a licensed copy of XP (although I'm sure MS would have some objections to me using it in a VM )

PatrickMay16:
Sorry man, but the incredible size of those files coupled with the slow speed of your server will probably stop anyone from looking at your screenshots.
You really ought to save your screenshots as jpg rather than png. The quality loss is only small, and the files would be a much more reasonable size....as you requested there are now (or should be!) .jpg versions of the files for your perusal here:

EDIT: I'm now even more sophistimacated and have thumbnails - woohoo ;) Please let me know if the following link doesn't work:

http://wamrfixit.homeip.net:8000/edgy/screenshots/index.html (http://wamrfixit.homeip.net:8000/edgy/screenshots/screenshots.html)

I didn't know that it was so slow, it's not something that you know from inside the network . Although it is only a 128kbit uplink thanks to our lousy monopoly phone company that dictates the rules!

Regards, Kev :)

I'm having my monthly jaunt with win2k to do magazine layout. The kitty keeps me amused. For Christmas I would like Adobe to make linux versions of the Creative Suite, and to make CS3 less of a memory hog.

I think either is unlikely :-|

Gone for a darker theme this month. I'm used to light, open themes and lots of blue, so it's a bit of a shock. I'm not sure it'll stay, to be honest - i think the Emerald theme and the panels are really sleek, but my Blubuntu'd laptop is still easier on the eyes to me...

Anyway, enjoy.

Here's my new desktop! Took me a few tries to finally get Beryl to run right on my machine. Looks good to me. (I noticed something wrong with the window that is in the background, a part of the top border is missing for some reason...only does that when I take a screenshot with the Print Screen button).

Enjoy!

http://www.boxwhore.org/modules/news/

Tenr even provides a very good tutorial on creating your own Fluxbox styles.

By the way, the Gentoo Wiki screenshot shows that the user has conky (or the torsmotoy adesklet) and three adesklets running besides Eterm. In case you were wondering what those were.

Tony.

this is the theme -
http://tenr.de/files/fluxboxstyles_archives/choke.tar.bz2
i changed bits of the setup though and all the fonts, i'll add my theme.cfg as an attachment.

the transparency is compiled into fluxbox isn't it?? i just clicked some options in the menu lol you need to log out of fluxbox for the settings to take effect though :)

i can't remember which gtk theme i was using along with the choke theme at that time now, but, i just looked at the nubuntu site and they say to use the "GTK theme Marble" :D

EDIT
you can check if you have transparency enabled by looking at the output of these -

xdpyinfo | grep RENDER

fluxbox -i
the output of both should have RENDER mentioned somewhere.

It's using a new rezlooks theme called Rezlooks-expressive, and the openbox theme is 'graphitetypething'. It uses pypanel at the bottom.
I thought the bash prompt was a lot more functional like that, and is very easy to set up.

Hey! how did u do tat with your applications menu???

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-main-menu

Then right click on the panel and choose "Main menu". Make sure you choose the one that looks like an lcd monitor, since gnome's original one is there too.

Ok here is my first desktop submission since returning to Ubuntu!

The wallpaper is by akiraeternal from deviantart and you can get it here (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/40201335/)

The icons are a mix of custom ones from pixelgirlpresents and the sladf theme from gnomelook.org.

mrs. fuscia has cast her vote. she says 'openbox'. well, she didn't actually say 'openbox'. she indicated a preference for whichever one i was using at the time. she doesn't like the one that 'makes all the windows go shooting all over the place' when she clicks on the wrong part of the desktop (this would be beryl). i haven't used openbox much at all since getting my laptop. it's nice to be using it again. a couple of things i've stumbled on that are new to me: using the xfce4-panel, as i can't get pypanel to install on edgy (all i need is a tasteful clock, anyway), and using kcontrol to control the color scheme and font of all the apps.

the theme is a modification of glitch.

epimer
December 14th, 2006, 02:28 AM
gnome-screenshot --delay=3

Where "3" is the delay in seconds between hitting enter and it taking a shot. So enter that, pose the cube to show its best side, and wait for the Screenshot dialog box to pop up.

Very attractive. Are you running E17? I've been wanting to try it but I've heard it's a bit tricky. As for keeping IT people in the dark, try a little beryl magic coupled with vmware. I should be working on finals but this is much more fun.

The win is legit but I like the wallpaper. I got the idea from kvnob in an earlier post. It makes me feel like I'm sticking it to the man. Actually I don't suppose MS would be too happy that I have both a dual boot and the vm but I'll dump the dual boot as soon as I'm convinced this works. Unfortunately, I need (or am too lazy to learn something new) to run SAS, Dreamweaver, and a couple others.

I'm using E17 right now. But that screeny is from work, so it's on a Windows machine, just an E17 wallaper on it so it "looks" offensive to the Minions of Microsoft.
