Ok, live cd – lets people take a look before “buying” is a very good idea.

But, I was reading on another forum where a Windows user asked if there where any movies of Linux out there. The Linux people where only laughing of him.

But, isn't this a good idea? If ubuntu.com also could have a movie on Google video, youtube etc where they showed of Ubuntu; like 1) how easy it is to change things, 2) an overview over the programs and so on? Many lazy Windows user would like to take a look – I guess.

You couldn't be more right. I'm an example of this...

Nobody that I know uses Linux for their personal computing. I myself didn't know much about it and always was under the impression that
1. there wasn't software available to run on Linux anyway, so why bother...
2. it's hard to get it going
3. things (files and apps) are not compatible with the windows world, which unfortunately is 90+% of the PC users community

I now know that those arguments are valid only to some extent, and that mainly the underlying cause is that there are not enough Linux users.

My point however is that I was happy with the MS way of life until one day I accidentally saw this video report (http://www.channel4.com/more4/news/news-opinion-feature.jsp?id=350) from UK's Channel4 News (I live in Italy but I just love that program. The best news I've ever seen on tv. Until that moment I felt no need to abandon Windows, but that day a door to a new world opened in front of me and now here I am, trying to convince my friends to switch and testing things at work with a view to migrate to Linux also the 'serious' stuff.

One well placed video, publication, tv-commercial and the ball starts rolling. Imagine what a whole campaign could do...

What could a whole campaign do? not an awful lot.

Once again you are under the illusion that the only thing lacking in the user population is sufficient enlightenment, and that having the Word preached to them, they will flock to it.

This is not the case, has never been the case, and is unlikely to be the case in the future.

The only way to overcome inertia is by the application of force in the right direction. That force comes from the controllers of sufficiently large networks shifting their networks over to some form of software over another.

If you want any evidence, witness Apple: slick hardware and slicker advertising have failed to get their platform much traction outside a hard core of fantatical Macolytes.

"Once again you are under the illusion that the only thing lacking in the user population is sufficient enlightenment, and that having the Word preached to them, they will flock to it."

I am a newbie to Linux, and I have used Windows from the first version. Before trying it I thought Linux:
- Had very few programs
- Very hard to use, not like Windows
- No benefits vs. Windows.

I came across the live cd one Sunday I was bored. I tried it just for fun - and was amazed! Add my less good thoughts about MS and Linux had a new user that Sunday.

I think this video would do the same thing for me as the live cd, and it would be easier for me to send friends/family a link to the video and say "look at this".

I had a similar experiance. My family thought I was a zelot. They could not see what the big deal was. It was not until I calmed down that I started converting people. Why is it that Linux is like a religion? Oh yeah, no real marketing. Sorry. Well, I keep an Ubuntu CD in my Bible now for door to door sales (joke!)

When I saw the title I thought you meant a Hollywood job. :p

Synopsis:
Mark Shuttleworth as a Rocky figure, taking on the maniacal Bill Gates (though Ballmer would be better) and confused about his friendship with Steve Jobs.
Linus Torvalds makes a cameo as a penguin.

Hmm, Spielberg where are you?

UBUNTU: Online no one can hear you type.

As long as it focuses on people enough, after a while most people will get put off by screencasts. If they had footage of normal people off the street trying ubuntu, I think that would speak a lot to the audience. As far as trying to make a coherent ubuntu "movie" , that could prove to be tricky on the editing side with a bunch of random videos. I think they should hash out a basic plot, then post (on forums, planet, fridge etc...) a request for certain types of videos every week. Then they could take the best of the videos that week. Basically, they need to tell the community what they need, instead of the other way around.

Right. I think that in order to get people into Linux, one has to show them Linux. A Live CD is ideal, and I believe ShipIt was/is (what's the status on ShipIt?) a step in the right direction. A movie, if properly put together, could certainly help.

You got me smiling with that one Leo he he

I dont care so much about focusing about the people behinde it. Dont think my "Windows fan" brother or brother in law would care for this.

But, if I could send my brother a link to a video showing;

Telling that Ubuntu is totally free, you can install it on all your computers.
The desktop(no, not the brown one, but my dark theme:-)
The logical start menu, where similarly applications are under the same folder, and not all in the same mess as in Windows
Virtual desktops and how easy it is to shift between them
Showing off the video player, amorak for music, that you can rip both music and dvd
Office applications – OOo and so on
That you can change all to your taste
All my photoprograms, and highlight some futures with them(witch most Windows user think are missing for Linux)
FF, Thunderbird, Feed reader, bitt torrent, Gaim.
Highlighting those thing that I liked as a Windows user
No virus, no need for always updated and run virus programs
No Trojans, no need for always update and run those programs
Secure, a OS that dos not listen to all its port all the time
No defragmenting, thats done via etc3 system
No systemregister that can break, no need for programs to fix the registry, no need to make it better with 3party programs.
One program for downloading and installing programs, a program that checks for update for ALL my programs.
No need to reboot all the time
Lesser need for space as Windows
Stabel, no mouse that freeze.
Free updates, updates that are coming faster then Windows(and perhaps telling about those times it takes 14 days for Win to say; ok, we shall fix this critical bug...)
No lisens check, no hated Genuine crap checking my legal payed OS.
A quick overview over all free programs, and how it works when installing one like Gnucash
Showing of Doom3 and Quake4.

Long list, but a video could show all those and also be short i think.

If there where one movie like this, every Windows user would think twice before thinking about Vista... I would as a Windows user.

So, you have a camera yes:-)

A commercial or movie can often stick in peoples memories . If handled right it could be good. I know if I had known about Ubuntus features sooner I'd of converted sooner..

Just please don't make it like those Mac commercials that has 2 guys representing Mac and PC.. those bug the hell outta me though I admit they are funny I don't think they show an honest representation of the procucts.

At any rate I am now comfirmed supporter of Ubuntu Linux. I tell everyone who will listen about it...
