We're looking for some helpers for our new project: UbuntuHQ (http://www.ubuntuhq.com).

UbuntuHQ (http://www.ubuntuhq.com)'s goal is to be a central place for all news, howto's, tutorials,... related to Ubuntu . We don't necessarily write the articles ourselves, but collect them from as many sources as possible. Currently, we're still bèta, but our official launch datum is planned to be 1 January 2007.

As you maybe remarked, English isn't our first (neither our second) language, so currently we're especially looking for people who'd like to help to write the most important static-content pages (about page, contribute, faq) in an acceptable language.

We can also use:

writers (static content, "marketing", ...)
a logo-designer
news posters (search + post news items, howto's, app reviews, ...)
everyone with a good idea or suggestion (improve the site,... Use the forum for this)

We will use the forum for communication and brainstorming. (At the moment, the login for UbuntuHQ isn't synchronised yet with the login for the forum , so you'll have to register apart on the forum).

I would actually prefer it if people rather contributed to the official wiki pages.

We need documentation similair to that of Debian/Gentoo etc. Splintering imho does not benefit the end user.

Why use ubuntuHQ over the offical wiki?

A lot of this was preventable at the beginning. The barrier to entry on the wiki was needlessly high back in Warty, so people tended to gravitate towards the forums.

You don't need a valid account to edit wikipedia, but you needed to do so to work on the Ubuntu wiki. as a result, a lot of people gravitated towards the forums.

I realize that that's an insufficient explanation, but it's the best I can think of. The Ubuntu community is not very wiki-friendly outside a very tightly-knit sub-community of devs.

I won't try to discourage you, but you are duplicating efforts. There are already the official wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/) and the UDSF (http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Main_Page) as well and a couple of others scattered around.

In any case, have fun with the project if it's what you want to do! :)

The more support and good documentation the merrier..... If you find some way to share your stuff with the wiki then that would be good too.

I agree with you that there should be one central place for the ubuntu-documentation, and that this should be the wiki. But I see the wiki as a manual, and I don't like reading manuals. When I was a newbie, it wasn't the wiki who helped me out of my problems, but it was Google, UbuntuGuide.org and several Ubuntu-blogs. These blogs also told me about what's going on in the community or about all kinds of usefull applications and howto's which I had never heard of.
Yesterday or so, for example, I posted an article on Jokosher (http://www.jokosher.org/), a new audio-editing application. Without having read about it in a blog, I would never have known this great app.

And UbuntuHQ should be seen as a way to centralise this news, so that users don't have to visit 20 blogs every time. When someone visited UbuntuHQ, he can be sure that he is fully informed about the Ubuntu-actualities.

I realise that I have not formulated UbuntuHQ's goals very well, so I'll try to do it in a better way:

UbuntuHQ's goal is to bring all the Ubuntu-news to the Ubuntu-user.

This project seems remarkably similar to the project I have been working on for over a year now due to launch in 3 days time.

My advice, I mean this in the nicest way possible. Do more research into this before starting anything new, becuase if its ubuntu specfic then I sugest you join the ubuntu doc team.
