I thought it might be nice to see what places our members call home. I'm from Conneaut which is the extreme northeast corner (aka Ohio's sharpest corner) of the state.

What are the snowfall projections for you all this year? I lived in buffalo for a couple years, I never had been scared of snow before (or since)

Brooklyn, Ohio. An Inner ring suburb of Cleveland.

I'm not sure what the snowfall forecast is this year. But Cleveland winters are kinda harsh. Thanks to the great lake up here, we got lots more snow then the rest of Ohio. I'm personally not in the "Snow Belt" toward eastern cleveland, but I still get a fair share of it :(

I am not sure if we are supposed to get slammed this year or not. Conneaut is in the snow belt and since I work in Painesville, I get to drive a bulk of the length of it each year.:frown:

I'm in Bedford, southeast of Cleveland :D ...although I moved most recently from Akron and my family has roots all over NE Ohio. For others in my quadrant of the state, I'm hoping we can do something similar to the Columbus LoCo in the future: a NEO LoCo, perhaps? ...of course, concentrating on a state-wide effort should be the first priority

I reside in Rittman, OH. It is a very small town near Wadsworth, Medina, Barberton. Old farming community in which very few farmers live anymore so basically it is a struggling community that as of last week does not even have a grocery store. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now.

I run Ubuntu 6.06 and VMWare with Windows 2000 Professional as a guest OS. I do this ONLY because I am an insurance agent and my business is all done online and utilizes extensive ActiveX Scripting which Linux obviously does not process very well.

I am not a pro with Ubuntu so I don't know what I might could contribute but I want to learn more.

JustDon, I was born and raised in Wadsworth. I am 41 years old. I do not know how old you are, but when I was young we did most of our shopping in Rittman. They had a Krogers and a department store called Conley's in a small mall on Sunset. I knew Conley's had been gone for many years, but they no longer have a grocery store!? That stinks! I used to get my hair cut by a fellow on the main street hill by a small diner downtown.

The Rittman Athletics and Reds were a part of our Little League system. I played for the Wadworth Indians. I had a fellow who worked for me at B&C in Baberton who turned out to be the left handed pitcher for the A's who picked us all off first base with the most awesome move I'd (n)ever seen! :-)

It's a mighty small world isn't it?!

Then moved over to Defiance, OH, over on the other side of Ohio, where I go to Defiance College for Computer Forensics (only a Freshman right now). Some pretty fun stuff soon though ;)

I'm not actually part of the Ohio LoCo team, but am looking at more information for it, but I am the resident computer geek in my dorm and have already installed Ubuntu onto two friends computers. Hello,

I just signed up for the Ohio Team, as well as the Ubuntu-Women and Kubuntu groups ... I'm located in the east Akron [Lakemore] area. The Ohio Education group sounds very interesting to me. I've spent the last two weeks reacquainting myself with linux in general, and with Kubuntu/Ichthux specifically.

When Vista came out, I decided to migrate [back] to Linux permanently. The only reason I went back to 'doze was to keep my skill level up in order to support my customers. I went looking for a Linux solution that I could offer to my customers as a viable alternative to 'doze. Ubuntu appears to be that solution.

Looking forward to getting to know the rest of the Ohio members.

Checking in from Mansfield. I think I saw at least two others from this neck of the woods as I perused the thread.

I am a bridge engineer who has been toying with PC's for over 20 years. I am relatively new to Linux in general, having toyed around first with Red Hat a few years ago, then Debian about a year and a half ago. Last year I discovered Ubuntu (Dapper), and I have been hooked since.

I am trying my hand at helping out with the Kubuntu ISO testing. Eventually, I may dust off my programming books and try my hand at something along those lines...

I think he meant are the murders today largely due to organized crime, like in the past, or just a high murder rate in general.

Oh, I don't think organized crime makes up much of any crime today. Most of it is probably just the typical 'I have a problem with x john doe' which eventually spurs a driveby or simply walking into a house and shooting, arsen, etc.
Some of it may have to do with drugs, but I am not certain. But yes, there was a lot of organized crime in the past, but pretty much all the old crime bosses are either dead or in jail at this point, and I don't think it makes up much of the problem any more.

Hi all,

I am very excited to be on the Ohio Ubuntu Team!

I was born in Romania and lived there for 12 years. And then I moved to North Canton, OH. I noticed one other user is from North Canton and another is from Canton so that's sweet.

Since September of last year I have lived in Columbus since I go to THE Ohio State University. In about 1 year I will be moving permanently to Columbus.

Anyway I would like to say I represent all 3 areas since I've lived in one of them at one point! Romania, North Canton, and Columbus! :D

Nice to meet you all!

Live here in Loudonville near Ashland and not far from Mansfield or Wooster far that matter. I commute to Canton 5-6 days a week (100 mile round trip) for work at the local steel mill. I ran linux for years off and on since Redhat 5.2 before installations where this easy. Mainly run WinXP on 3 PC's and now Linux again on an 80Gig drive on one of my Win PC's. Always loved Linux but most of my work have been on Windows platform since Dos 6 and Windows 3.1 (go figure) and there's lots of work repairing and updating Windows trust me as some of you may know.

Hi all!

I live in Columbus, less than a mile East of the Ohio State University (currently a student there majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering).

I have been using Ubuntu for several months now. I had some previous Linux experience, as I ran Gentoo around 2000. Then, the Gentoo installation on my computer went funny, and I couldn't fix it, so I went back to ******* for a while.

When I started using Ubuntu, and showing it off, my family took to it, so now I got both my mother and my sister on Ubuntu as well as a friend, and they're just loving it. I work for a Center as a student worker at OSU and currently I'm trying to get that shop to "take the plunge" to Ubuntu. Wish me luck. There seems to be an attitude against Open Source at OSU which really disappoints me - I mean, I thought Universities were supposed to SUPPORT things like Open Source, not avoid them!

I went to OLF finally (been meaning to go for years, it just always landed on an awkward weekend). It was sweet. I was so glad to see all those people with interests like my own, and to talk with them and learn new things.

@Vorian: if I have the right person (apologies if I don't) you ran the "Ubuntu for Beginners" presentation. Thanks for that! My mother and I were there and it really helped her start to learn the system well. I am very excited about Gutsy, I can't wait for its realease. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the release party. Still having trouble with saying "oo-b-oo-nt-oo" and not "oo-bun-t-oo" but I'll work on it! Thank you for letting me know about the Ohio LoCo team! I didn't know it existed before that presentation. Also thanks for all your other posts on the forums! I've used your advice many a times! :KS

@ Lyceum: What's Up? My parents live in Westerville, and I did too until about a month and a half ago. Sweet place. My alma matter is there - Westerville South High School. Did you go there? I may know you (or not). Glad to hear that Ubuntu is used in Westerville as well!

Alright, that ends my rant! Greetings all! ):P

Hey,

I'm a first year at Miami in Oxford, majoring in Computer Engineering, I'm from Cincinnati. I just jumped back into Linux once I heard 7.10 was coming. I've been on and off it for the past 2 years... I got a new computer about 6 months ago so the one I had been dual booting I no longer have access to (its at home and only has XP now), I thought it was a good time to try Ubuntu again and it's better than ever.

Anyway, Ubuntu is now my main operating system and I'm loving it.

Can't wait to do more with it.

Been using Ubuntu exclusively for about 5 months, having started with a Wubi install that I promoted to a full partition-based install, and then updated to 7.10 (sort of -- the upgrade hasn't gone completely smoothly).

It's been a great ride so far, and I'm looking forward to telling M$ where they can stick their OS. Is it too early to start making plans for OLF '08? I'd love to add it to my 'con schedule, esp. since I already get to Columbus for Marcon & Origins...

Hey All!

I happen to currently reside in one of the more boring corners of Ohio, Gallipolis. Luckily that will be changing in June of '08.

I found Ubuntu through Popular Mechanics about two weeks ago. I managed to find the time right before finals to install it earlier this week on my $100 Thinkpad A30. (After doubling it's monetary value by adding 10x more RAM.)

No, I have no idea how to pronounce Ubuntu, by the way.

I've already managed to mess my system up and for a while I was really concerned that it was a hardware breakdown, not a software oops. So I asked my local repair shop to take a peek to see if they could tell me if there was a mechanical error. Of course, two hours after they closed on Friday, I find the work around for the Ubuntu bug. At least it is on a laptop I do not yet rely on.

I'm having fun with Linux so far. I have found that I like Ubuntu for most things because it is easier on the eyes, and Puppy Linux if I need it up right this second.

Week 1 comes to a close with my laptop in the shop over the weekend for no reason. Not the raving success of "it just works" but not a complete flop to make me turn away from Linux. At least the inspection is free for the hardware.

I am still processing how to read the bug fixes and the jargon. I am sometimes unsure if I am reading a command prompt to be typed in, or a series of windows to navigate.

If anyone would like to help/chat/get to know the Ohio newbie, feel free to send me a note.

Leo §.

Correct pronunciation, I believe, is "oo-boon-too", although I've also heard "oo-bun-too" and even "oo-bahn-too".

Wikkipedia says 'oo-BOON-too'

As long as we are just typing, I don't think it matters ;)

I've just recently started pronouncing it correctly.. "oo-BOON-too"

I used to pronounce it "Ya-bun-too" which sounds better IMO, meh.

I'm the new guy from Columbus.

Been using Ubuntu (& Kubuntu & Edubuntu, depending on what computer I'm at) rather regularly the last several months Unfortunately, gotta do the dual boot method for my laptop as Windows is required for school.

Just starting out the CIT program in Software Development at Columbus State... I've been concentrating on much more graphical areas for several years now, so hopefully all goes well with this -- it's been about 10 years since I've actively done programming and that was basic on an Apple IIe.

I hail from Ravenna, Ohio but currently live in Milton Township (Lake Milton). I have been pretty active with Ubuntu for a couple of years now. Don't really know why I haven't checked out this Loco Team sooner. At any rate, I just joined the Marketing Team and I am still trying to figure out how to get started with doing something -- anything in it. I checked out the Wiki page and the Launchpad page, and am in Freenode (ubuntu-marketing). Just need to figure out how to get involved with a project.

Currently, Brimfield Township, OH ... been hither & thither over the years, e.g. Tremont City, Springfield, Dayton, Miamisburg, Sheffield Lake & Sheffield Village, St. Marys, Warren, Urbana, Rootstown, Black Horse, Ravenna, Kent, & Barberton.

Wrote my 1st program on IBM punch cards. Anyone remember the 8-inch floppy diskette? First modem was blazing 110 baud.

My daily commute ... plant feet on carpet, check into the Lav, then the food room, then to the PC/radio room; 0 miles driven. If curiosity peeks I may check the condition through the silica pane. I work PT/FT hours doing Help Desk for Educate-Online. I've worked with CP/M, DOS, Unix, Linux, all the MS except ME. I own too many PC's

Hi all-

I live in Parma Heights, the ******* child of Parma, i.e., yet another subburd of Cleveland. Originally from NE Ohio in some form or another, and went to school in Pittsburgh.

Out of curiosity, is this site, or a new version of it, somewhere? - http://www.ncolug.org/ The link is dead.

My wife and I are planning to move to Chichago or New York at some point in the however-distant future. Namely when our daughter is a little older. But anyway...

Mt Perry OH. Been using Ubuntu for about a year. I have converted almost 30 people to Ubuntu in that time. However most of my converts are from other parts of the country. I sell hatching eggs in online auctions. I send everyone a copy of Ubuntu. I have given support on the installations by using the forums here. I recently gave copies to a friend of mines daughter to take to her computer lab teacher. The teacher decided to make them part of the class. They each had to build a computer and install Ubuntu on it. She loved the experience and now uses Ubuntu on her home computer. Do you think that there is a list of the schools with computer labs in this state? We should find a way to get copies to all of them!
