Linux yes! There was a movie on youtube with a linux powered iPod nano. But ubuntu? no. There are more suitable candidates.

No.
But a ogg/flac linux based player would be great.

not that i own an mp3 player. but if i did buy one, i honestly couldnt care if it used one OS or another, as long as it played the mp3s. i mean whats the difference. really?

Linux based audio player would be fine. In truth though I'm more interested in finding players that play Ogg.

Voted no. Why do we need a Linux based mp3 player? Just because it's branded "Linux" doesn't mean it's better than everything else out there.

They've already made a fully GPL OS that runs of a variety of MP3 players and can do tons of stuff. It's called RockBox. I've never used it as I don't own am mp3 player but it looks pretty featurefull.

Something to play all my ogg files would be ace. In fact, I just updated my iPod with some more tracks and (without thinking) tried to add some ogg files. I had to dash off and convert them to MP3 before I could load them!

Not only is it an MP3 player for MP#, Ogg, AAC, DivX and JPEG, but there's a radio receiver built right in. A text viewer too.

Unfortunately, no one knows if they ever sell this player outside of Japan. But when I saw this link on digg, I also thought that a linux based player which supports all the free codecs is a good idea. This should be combined with a music store that sells music without all this DRM crap and a decent desktop music player. Maybe Canonical could do this. Then we would have something like Mac/IPod/ITunes but without all these stupid DRM restrictions. And since I think that there is a market (at least I would buy one :-D ), Canonical could make some money, which they could use to improve Ubuntu.

Then the GP2X is the thing for you.

It plays films, it plays ogg and mp3, it emulates so many consoles its just silly and the firmware and so on is all open source, so if you want to do something with it, you can. It runs an embedded version of linux and storage is based on NAND and SD cards, so you can have as much or as little crap on it as you want really. It also supports USB hosting (unpowered) and has a breakout board so you can attach external devices. If you are clever with a soldering iron you don't need the breakout board, you can modify a cable for USB and do whatever you need to do.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago and its the reason I installed ubuntu. there are things I want to do with it and I'm figuring out how to do them right now. This thing has an awful lot of potential and I'm somewhat convinced its going to be a fairly big thing in the future.

There was a link earlier in the thread, but have a look at http://www.gp2x.co.uk for more info.

cheers,

Alan

Are there any further technical details on the TurboLinux-player? It seems very interesting to me and also looks good but I won't buy anything without knowing the technical specifications beforehand.

If the specs are promising it could become a quite able competitor to Apples iPod. The Linux community could state that Linux is great this way once again.

No, that's a games console with mp3 support. Jack of all trades, master of none, as they say.
