I know this is a little early (okay, extremely early) but I thought it would be interesting to have an IRC channel.

(If there is already an IRC channel, oops! I couldn't find any; the LoCo wiki page is borked.)

Since the team appears to have some members already, it's always fun to have a chat room. It's a place to talk about the Buckeyes, Ubuntu, and maybe Ohio events and planning. It's a centralized place for discussion. Like the forums, but faster.

Good idea? Or is this too early on?

I have a lot of experience with FreeNode's channel system, IRC, and ChanServ. So, if no one here knows much about IRC, I can get a channel up and running pretty quickly. :)

Hey Jacob!

That is a good idea! ;)

We are in the process of getting it set up.

When it's online, we will be #ubuntu-oh or #ubuntu-ohio

I'll make a post as soon as it's running.

Sounds good, although I've never done IRC before. I'll have to do some research.

Steven - Just install x-chat (if you don't already have it installed)

Ubuntuforums has a channel..... http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=69068

I've never used IRC before either. But I saw some decent looking progs for it. And I believe there is a FF extension I can use? Forgot its name. When the channel is set up, ill monkey with it and learn it. I'm sure its not too hard :p

If anyone's wondering why there are no channel operators, it's because we are following the Freenode channel guidelines:
http://freenode.net/channel_guidelines.shtml
There are operators on the channel, we're just not visible as operators.

I (nick jacobmp92 on IRC) will be on the channel most of the time, although I may not be active. If anyone needs any operator jobs done, tell me here or on IRC. If anyone wants to become an operator, post here or on the channel also.

ChanServ is our friendly bot. Ignore it, unless you want to give it commands. (/msg chanserv help for info)

I think I'm set up, but IRC is a new animal to me.

Glad to see the channel finally up. Now we just need people to chat with. :D

I could help as an operator. I've been using IRC for six years, and have been on freenet for about two months now.

You have operator privliges now!

To make yourself an operator, use /msg chanserv op #ubuntu-ohio.
Again, as per Freenode guidelines, use Op privliges sparangly to help keep the channel temperature down. :)

I'll set up a custom Java IRC applet for this channel. Whenever the official site is up (if approved) it can be set up there. For now, it will be available at http://ohiolocoirc.codechunk.net/ whenever I get it running. Usually if people don't have an IRC client, they won't visit, but this gives them a reason to. :)
